I Want to Be Healed from the Heart: Recommended Western Ballads Sung by Female Vocalists

Ballads are known for having many melodies and lyrics that really hit you in the heart.

Suddenly, but do you know the clear definition of a ballad?

In fact, the definition of a ballad is quite ambiguous: as long as it’s a “story-like song,” it can be considered a ballad regardless of the melody.

So this time, we’ve picked out some classic ballad masterpieces.

Unlike in Japan, Western ballads feature a wide variety of melodies, so be sure to check them out.

The first half features famous classics, but the second half includes lesser-known yet incredibly tasteful tracks.

If you’re well-versed in Western music, don’t miss ranks 11–20!

Favourite ExMaisie Peters

This is a ballad by Maisie Peters, who debuted in her teens as a standout singer-songwriter known for singing as if she’s speaking to you.

She began sharing her music primarily on YouTube and has steadily grown her fanbase with her distinctive voice.

While this song is a love song, it charmingly captures feelings unique to a young girl, making it especially relatable to listeners of the same generation.

It’s a track that showcases her talent and hints at a promising future.

Dionne Warwick – HEARTBREAKER (with Lyrics)
HEARTBREAKERDionne Warwick

This song is where Dionne’s crisp, articulate pronunciation stands out the most.

I remember how happy I was when I first heard it in high school and could somehow understand the lyrics without even looking at the liner notes.

Among Dionne’s many hit songs, this is one of my favorites.

emails i can't sendSabrina Carpenter

Born in 1999 and part of Gen Z, many people may know actress-singer Sabrina Carpenter from the Disney Channel comedy-drama “Girl Meets World.” Alongside her acting career, she has been active as a singer-songwriter; even those unfamiliar with that side of her might recognize her as the vocalist on “Alien,” her collaboration with tropical house standard-bearer Jonas Blue—music fans might think, “Oh, it’s her.” In July 2022 she released her fifth album, Emails I Can’t Send, and here I’d like to introduce the title track that opens the record.

Though it runs under two minutes, it’s a memorable ballad in which Sabrina’s restrained vocals beautifully resonate over serene piano tones and elegant strings.

Considering the meaning of choosing a song like this as the album opener and reading the lyrics through the lens of a title like “Emails I Can’t Send,” you can’t help but feel a pang of sorrow at the confessional words from a still-young artist nursing a wounded heart.

Lost On YouLP

Singer-songwriter LP, who earns strong support from women with her boyish style.

She’s well known as a lesbian, but she’s also widely admired by both men and women for being incredibly cool.

It’s not just her looks—her music is highly acclaimed as well.

Her signature song, “Lost On You,” became such a hit that artists around the world have covered it.

Rather than a classic ballad, it feels more like a slick, cool kind of ballad.
