It’s not widely known that Elton John did the soundtrack for the film Friends—Paul and Michelle, which was especially popular in Japan.
The theme song became a minor hit in the United States at the time, but the soundtrack was later discontinued.
It wasn’t released on CD until 1992.
Anytime You Need A FriendMariah Carey
Mariah Carey scored a huge hit with her cover of the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There,” and “Anytime You Need a Friend” is similarly a friendship-themed song.
It’s a good track, but as a single it underperformed for her and missed the top ten.
WannabeSpice Girls
The Spice Girls’ well-known debut single.
It topped the charts across the United States, various European countries, and Australia.
Surprisingly, the lyrics are about female friendship, which may be why it resonated with many women.

TLC kept releasing hit songs from their debut in 1992 through 1999, and “What About Your Friends” was one of them.
