In the deathcore scene since the 2010s, it’s no exaggeration to say that Lorna Shore is one of the most important bands.

Hailing from New Jersey, they made their album debut with “Psalms” in 2015, sending shockwaves through the scene.

Their career hasn’t been smooth sailing; after enduring repeated lineup changes, they established a style known as blackened deathcore, fusing deathcore with symphonic black metal.

In 2021, they welcomed the astonishingly powerful growler Will Ramos as their new vocalist, and their track “To the Hellfire” garnered worldwide attention, catapulting them to a major breakthrough.

Ramos’s seemingly inhuman vocal performance, combined with their heavy deathcore sound enriched by orchestration, is music that should resonate not only with extreme metal fans but with anyone who appreciates innovative heavy sounds in a broader sense.

Be sure to check out Pain Remains, their first album since Ramos joined, released in 2022.

Formed in 1987, Sweden’s Meshuggah is a band that pursues avant‑garde metal built on complex polyrhythms and polymeters.

Grounded in death metal and fused with progressive elements and a groovy sound, their musical style has earned support from many musicians.

Since the album Destroy Erase Improve, they have drawn attention for their experimental approach and advanced musicianship, and their innovation has been highly acclaimed, including a nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

Their distinctive sound—combining the massive riffs of 8‑string guitars, jazz‑fusion‑tinged solos, and robotic death vocals—is the perfect pick for listeners seeking new musical frontiers.

As pioneers of death metal, the American band Death wields enormous influence.

From their 1987 debut album Scream Bloody Gore, they established themselves as a pivotal force in the death metal scene with ferocious guitar riffs, complex rhythmic structures, and deep growled vocals.

On albums like Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance, they incorporated progressive elements and expanded their musicality beyond the confines of death metal.

Their innovative approach has been highly praised by many music critics and fans.

Sadly, in 1999 the band’s central figure Chuck Schuldiner was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and he passed away in 2001 at the young age of 34.

Even so, the music they left behind—marked by technical performances and lyrically philosophical depth—comes highly recommended for those who are drawn to extreme metal as well as more complex musical expressions.

Helloween is the quintessential example of so-called “German metal.” Since their debut in 1984, they’ve achieved worldwide popularity with their melodic power metal to speed metal rooted in Germany.

Although guitarist Michael Weikath is now the only original member, the band is also known for having produced musicians like Kai Hansen—who left to form Gamma Ray—and Michael Kiske, the renowned vocalist who helped drive the band’s early popularity.

Their flowing twin-lead guitars with classical influences, astonishing high-register vocals, and beautiful, wistful melodies that particularly appeal to Japanese listeners make them easy to enjoy even for newcomers to heavy metal.

Start with their classic third album from 1988, Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II—also known in Japan by the title “Shugoshinden: Dainishō” (The Legend of the Guardian Gods – Chapter Two).

PainkillerJudas Priest

Formed in 1969 in Birmingham, UK, they are a seminal presence in the origins of heavy metal.

While the earliest lineup was entirely different, the band evolved its sound and fashion over the course of its career, establishing the prototypical “heavy metal” style: leather-and-studs attire, the searing high register of vocalist Rob Halford—known as the “Metal God”—and a hard-edged, highly stylized sound.

Although Halford left the band for a period, he returned and they have been actively performing ever since.
