Ke Tlo FihlaMaleh

Living in Japan, it’s hard not to internalize the assumption that “Western music = America and the UK.” But just as you can’t truly know what the world’s best cuisine is by only knowing Japanese and American food, the same goes for music: the broader your exposure, the more refined your sensibilities become.

I suspect some of you feel the same way.

For those people, I’d like to recommend an artist: Mareah.

She’s a female singer from the Kingdom of Lesotho whose impressively sophisticated songwriting blends folk traditions into Black music, and whose powerful vocal ability is striking.

KandaikiMammal Hands

Mammal Hands, based in Norwich, UK, are a piano trio that, despite their unusual bass-less lineup, create a refined sound.

Formed in 2012 by brothers Jordan Smart and Nick Smart, they debuted in 2014 with the album “Animalia.” Drawing on a wide range of influences—ambient, jazz, electronic music, folk, and Sufi music—they’ve established a distinctive approach in which all members contribute equally to composition.

Their 2020 album “Captured Spirits” garnered high praise from notable artists such as Bonobo for its trance-like allure, skillfully blending improvisation with rhythmic loops.

Since April 2024, Rob Turner, known as the drummer of GoGo Penguin, has joined the band, bringing fresh energy.

Highly recommended for those who want to immerse themselves in a sound that is both delicate and dynamic.

When it comes to classic progressive rock songs, Marillion’s “Kayleigh” is indispensable.

Released in 1985, the track reached No.

2 on the UK Singles Chart.

Inspired by vocalist Fish’s past romantic experiences, it’s a poignant and beautiful love song.

Many listeners have likely related to its lyrics of regret over a lost love.

The song appears on the seminal album Misplaced Childhood, which defined Marillion’s career.

It’s highly recommended for moments when you want to soothe the pain of heartbreak or reminisce about your youth.

Marilyn Manson’s song “Killing Strangers,” released in 2014, is also featured on the soundtrack of the popular film John Wick starring Keanu Reeves.

It’s said that the song was influenced by Manson’s father’s experiences with PTSD from the Vietnam War, and its poignant melody—an alternative rock piece with blues elements—conveys the futility of war and the cycle of violence.

While it may seem far removed from the typical image of the band Marilyn Manson, it’s worth knowing that they created a song like this.
