Funny Western pop songs for karaoke skits

When you think of karaoke in Japan, most people sing J‑pop, but every now and then someone does an English song and the room really lights up, right?

This time, we’re featuring “interesting” tracks from Western music.

That doesn’t mean songs that are simply funny.

In Japan, where English isn’t widely spoken, singing Western songs just because the lyrics are funny won’t really land.

Rather than “funny” as in comical, we’ve selected songs that are “interesting” in the sense of intriguing.

Of course, we’ve only picked tracks that are likely to hype up a karaoke session, so feel free to use this as a reference!

Funny Western karaoke gag songs (41–50)

Welcome to the JungleGuns N’ Roses

Guns’ first single.

It even includes scenes of them playing in small, cramped live houses, exuding the raw charm of underground rebels—an anthem of hard rock.

The choreography by Axl in this song is striking, so if you learn it and take it to karaoke, it’ll really hype up the crowd.

It’s Oh So QuietBjörk

A Björk-style musical number.

It’s a song with dramatic dynamics, going from very soft singing to very loud.

Whisper during the quiet parts and shout during the loud parts.

It’s funny because everyone will jump in surprise.

This song is known for having its music video covered by the five-member new unit “Royal Flush” led by Chiemi Blouson.

The original music video is cool, but when I think about the cover, I can’t help but laugh.

The idea of covering not the song itself, but the entire music video, is interesting, isn’t it? It feels like it could become a new trend.

Purple HazeJimi Hendrix

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Purple Haze (Live at the Atlanta Pop Festival)

If you go wild in psychedelic clothes and keep shouting “Papu-heyzz!” at the top of your lungs, you’re already Jimi Hendrix.

Rather than trying to follow the lyrics or melody, repeatedly yelling “Papu-heyzz!” might get a better reaction from the crowd.

As for me, when I run out of material at Western-music karaoke, I get by by going full Jimi Hendrix.

My WayFrank Sinatra

"My Way" by Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra live

The lyrics themselves are a serious masterpiece about life, but for some reason it strongly evokes the image of older managers and executives singing it intensely and emotionally at karaoke.

If you consciously sing it in the opposite style as a parody, it could get laughs.

For the ending, finish with your arms spread wide to make it feel authentic.

Try practicing by really getting into character.
