[2026] Classic Western songs to celebrate the New Year: Popular tracks to kick off the year (61–70)

Funky New YearThe Eagles

Just looking at the title, Japanese people who aren’t very comfortable with English might find themselves tilting their heads and thinking, “A funky New Year?” Funky New Year first appeared in 1978 as the B-side to the Eagles’ cover of the Christmas standard Please Come Home for Christmas—released as a 12-inch single by the world-famous American band and standard-bearers of West Coast rock.

In Japan, the A-side was given the localized title “Futari Dake no Christmas.” Never included on an original studio album or a greatest hits collection, it could be called a hidden gem known to those in the know.

True to its title, the song features a memorable guitar riff and bass line steeped in soul and funk, and its appeal lies in a gritty, swampy vibe rather than sleek urban sophistication.

Even if you’re not an Eagles fan, pick it up if you spot it at a record shop.

Give Me Everything ft. Ne-Yo, Afrojack, NayerPitbull

This is a dancefloor-igniting track released by American rapper Pitbull.

In collaboration with Ne-Yo, Afrojack, and Nayer, it features an energetic, catchy sound.

The lyrics carry a message of “cherishing the moment,” inspiring listeners with a positive outlook.

Included on the album Planet Pit, released in June 2011, it topped charts around the world.

It’s a great pick not only for clubs and parties, but also when you need a change of pace or a boost of confidence.

As one of Pitbull’s signature songs, it continues to be loved by many to this day.

Happy New YearThe Big Moon

The Big Moon are one of the girl bands embodying the “now” of guitar rock in London.

Their second album, Walking Like We Do, released in 2020, reached No.

19 on the UK charts despite being an indie release.

For fans of alternative and indie rock looking for New Year’s background music, I recommend Happy New Year from their debut album, Love in the 4th Dimension.

Its rough, 2000s-style garage guitar rock and slightly nostalgic melody leave a strong impression, and the lively music video—where the members dance with children without their instruments—is also memorable.

The lyrics aren’t just a simple New Year’s celebration; they invite deeper interpretation, so be sure to check them out as well.

A heartwarming song that heralds the start of the New Year.

Featured on Canadian singer-songwriter Tim McMorris’s 2014 album “Alive,” this track carries a positive message celebrating the arrival of a hopeful new year.

With its lively pop sound and uplifting lyrics, it gently encourages those setting their New Year’s resolutions.

It has also been used in TV commercials and corporate promotional videos, so many people may have heard it before.

It’s the perfect song for anyone who wants to start the year with a fresh mindset.

Why not welcome a hopeful New Year’s morning wrapped in McMorris’s warm vocals?

New Year’s Honoursanother sunnyday

Another Sunny Day – New Year’s Honours (1992)
New Year's Honoursanother sunnyday

For those who want to deliberately pick a different kind of Western song for the New Year, I recommend this fairly niche track.

Among listeners in Japan who are deeply into what’s called neo-acoustic or guitar pop, Another Sunny Day has a legendary status and is held in very high regard.

They were a band on the popular neo-acoustic label SARAH, and in typical fashion, they broke up without ever releasing an original full-length album.

The song I’m introducing here, “New Year’s Honours,” has the feel of classic neo-acoustic: delicate acoustic guitar arpeggios, a vulnerable vocal, and assured songwriting all coming together.

It’s included on their only compilation, the 1992 release London Weekend.

Strictly speaking, the title refers to the British honours system, where the New Year Honours list—such as recipients of the Order of the British Empire—is announced at the end of each year.

That said, the song itself doesn’t actually touch on that; instead, it poetically depicts the tender, fragile emotions of a protagonist who has lost someone precious.

I hope you enjoy that contrast as part of its appeal.

New Year’s Eve is a 2011 romantic comedy directed by Garry Marshall, famed for classics like Pretty Woman.

For some, it’s a film that comes to mind every time the New Year rolls around.

If you’ve seen it, you’ll know that Jon Bon Jovi—the frontman of Bon Jovi—appears in the film as a rock star and performs at a nighttime party hosted by a music company.

The song he sings there is Have a Little Faith in Me.

At a New Year’s gathering of music lovers who’ve seen the movie, gently strumming this song on guitar would surely be a hit.

By the way, Have a Little Faith in Me isn’t a Bon Jovi original—the original was released in 1987 by John Hiatt, one of America’s quintessential singer-songwriters.

It’s included on his acclaimed, family-themed album Bring the Family, which you should definitely give a listen to as well.
