The opening track Oblivious—also known in Japan by its title “Omoide no Sunny Beat”—features a lightly Latin-tinged groove that’s fresh and stylish, with a melody of the highest order, making it a quintessential, straight-down-the-line neo-aco number.
If you’re looking to try just one album in the genre for starters, this is the one to hear.
At the same time, it’s worth stressing—especially given the era—that this wasn’t merely fragile music by naive boys; for instance, the lyrics of the fan favorite Walk Out to Winter mention Joe Strummer of The Clash.
In any case, this album is packed with gems and has no filler, showcasing Roddy’s brilliance as a songwriter and radiating an evergreen appeal that transcends the confines of its particular movement—one of the greats of ’80s UK indie rock.
