Born in Olympia, Washington in the 1990s, Bikini Kill made a striking impact on the punk rock scene.

Armed with a feminist perspective and an aggressive sound, they dominated the music world as pioneers of the riot grrrl movement.

The 2004 album American Idiot became hugely popular among younger generations and was a massive hit, selling 6 million copies in the United States alone.

To date, they have been nominated for the Grammys 20 times and have won 5 awards.

With a stellar track record that includes being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, they remain a beloved presence across generations.

As pioneers of the hardcore punk scene, Circle Jerks formed in Los Angeles in 1979.

The band began activity centered around Keith Morris from Black Flag and Greg Hetson from Redd Kross, releasing their debut album, Group Sex, in 1980.

Known for politically charged lyrics and an aggressive sound, their 1982 album Wild in the Streets earned massive support from the skate and surf communities.

Although they disbanded in 1990, they have repeatedly reunited and gone on hiatus, and in 2019 they resumed activity to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their debut.

Having left a significant mark on the history of punk rock, their music continues to captivate many fans to this day.

Their debut album, Joyce Manor, released in January 2011, was selected as one of Punknews’s Albums of the Year, gaining momentum through online word of mouth.

They have since released four more albums, steadily growing to the point of charting on the Billboard 200.

Teaming up with producer Rob Schnapf on the album Cody, they established a more refined musical identity.

With short yet striking songs and a live performance brimming with defiance, they’ve become a leading presence in today’s punk scene.

HopeDESCENDENTS

Descendents, from Manhattan Beach, California, are a punk rock band formed in 1977.

In their early years they leaned toward power pop/surf punk, but after Milo Aukerman joined as vocalist in 1979, they shifted to melodic hardcore punk.

With the release of the album Milo Goes to College in September 1982, they established their presence and went on to have a major influence on later melodic hardcore and pop punk.

They followed it up with classic records like I Don’t Want to Grow Up and Enjoy!, continuing to captivate many fans with their blend of punk, pop, and summery sounds.

They also have a North American tour planned for 2024, making them a band well worth checking out for anyone interested in punk history.
