[2026 Edition] A roundup of popular and classic Western songs to listen to in September (101–110)

SeptemberKirk Franklin

In January 2007, Kirk Franklin, a leading figure in American gospel music, released a bold arrangement of a classic by Earth, Wind & Fire.

Seamlessly blending gospel and funk, the track preserves the original’s celebratory spirit while adding a heartwarming message of faith and hope.

Featured on the album The Fight of My Life, the song reached No.

1 on Billboard’s Gospel chart.

Franklin’s powerful vocals and the gospel chorus tie memories of September to God’s love, inspiring listeners with courage and hope.

As early autumn evenings set in, why not let yourself be carried by this soul-stirring voice?

Lana Del Rey, a singer-songwriter from New York, describes her own genre as “sadcore,” and true to that label, she has released many deeply melancholic songs.

Her musical style is perfect for September, a month that carries a sense of wistfulness.

A work I especially recommend is Norman Fucking Rockwell.

While its melodies evoke soft rock and dream pop, it’s by no means cheerful; it fully embodies what she calls “sadcore.” Its poignant melodies are perfect for autumn.

Self CareMac Miller

Rapper Mac Miller, who gained popularity with his flashy style.

He sadly passed away in 2018 due to an overdose, but his flat-rap style has been loved by many heads.

Among his works, the one I especially recommend for September is Self Care.

When this song was released, Mac Miller had a string of misfortunes that month, including being in an accident and breaking up with Ariana Grande.

I think the lyrics, which depict regret over various events, are perfect for a busy September.

Fever To The FormNick Mulvey

A 2014 track by British musician Nick Mulvey, who also made waves with a Mercury Prize nomination.

Blending summer-evoking folk influences with a slightly wistful vocal and sound, it’s perfect for the end of the season.

What Am I To You?Norah Jones

It’s a slightly older classic by Nora, but as autumn sets in I always find myself wanting to hear her voice.

Country music really suits the fall, doesn’t it? When I listen to her bare, unadorned voice, it feels like my worries naturally melt away.

Enjoy this cute love song.

Make it Stop (September’s Children)Rise Against

Make it Stop (September’s Children)Rise Against

Rise Against is a popular band with roots in hardcore punk that has continually fought on the offensive, wielding passionate, emotional melody as a weapon and taking on political themes like social injustice and abuses of power.

Even more than 20 years after their formation, they remain at the forefront, and among their many classics, I’d like to introduce Make It Stop (September’s Children) as a song especially fitting for September.

Released in 2011, it appears on their sixth album, Endgame, which reached No.

2 on the U.S.

Billboard charts, and the track addresses a very heavy subject.

“September’s Children” refers to young people who took their own lives in September, and the message—delivered with the anthemic melodies and dynamic rock sound characteristic of a band that has evolved from early hardcore and melodic punk into a mature rock act—speaks to the harsh realities of life and the importance of resisting them and keeping on living.

The music video, aligned with the song’s theme, may be difficult for many to watch, but its hopeful turn in the latter half offers relief and reminds us that we must not abandon that same hope in the real world.

Singer-songwriter St.

Vincent, who has gained popularity for her music rooted in indie pop and baroque pop.

This track, Early Autumn, is a collaboration between her and the all-female folk group The Living Sisters.

Its nostalgic sound and melody, reminiscent of standards from the 1950s and 1960s, feel perfect for September—the elegant turning point of the seasons.

Be sure to give it a listen.
