Farewell Songs in Western Music: World’s Masterpieces and Popular Tracks (1–10)
See You AgainWiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth

Originally, it was created as a “song of eternal farewell to a best friend,” so I don’t think it fits the artist’s intent.
The phrase “See You Again” almost always implies bereavement in English-speaking countries.
In this case, a more appropriate expression would be “Farewell.” Even so, it has gained popularity among younger generations as a graduation song.
Chosen as the ending theme for Furious 7, it became an instant hit.
The emotional lyrics by Wiz Khalifa, Charlie Puth’s sweet vocals, and the music video—where the worldview of the story and the too-soon death of Paul Walker, who had long starred as the protagonist of the series, are beautifully synchronized—generated a huge buzz.
Don’t Look Back In AngerOasis

Oasis, a rock band from Manchester.
They’re hugely popular in Japan as well.
Although they disbanded in 2009, they remain a rock band loved by listeners around the world even after their breakup.
Don’t Look Back In Anger is one of their most popular songs.
When you hear the chorus, you’ll probably go, “Oh, I know this one!” It’s a bittersweet yet beautiful classic about a breakup.
Shake It OutFlorence & The Machine

Florence and the Machine, a UK band known for blending a variety of genres with rock and soul music.
British rock bands are great at skillfully mixing different styles, aren’t they? Their track “Shake It Out” is no exception—a sophisticated song that fuses multiple genres.
Setting out on a journey also means saying goodbye.
This emotional piece gently gives courage to those who are afraid to take that first step.
New DayAlicia Keys

Alicia Keys, who gained worldwide fame with “If I Ain’t Got You,” is an R&B singer known for her distinctive husky voice.
Her song “New Day” is a work marked by powerful lyrics.
As you can probably sense from the melody as well, the song carries the message that one should act with strength precisely when setting out on a new journey.
It’s an energetic piece in both lyrics and melody.
While it isn’t R&B, it’s a track where you can still enjoy her vocals, so be sure to check it out!
When We Were YoungAdele

Adele is one of the UK’s top artists.
She gained worldwide popularity with “Rolling in the Deep,” and in 2009 she won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, becoming internationally renowned.
She’s a familiar artist in Japan as well.
“When We Were Young” is one of Adele’s classic songs, expressing the feelings of those who are sending off someone who is setting out on a new journey.
The heartfelt lyrics—evoking a bond that could be like that of parent and child or lovers—leave a strong impression.
FireworkKaty Perry

Katy Perry is an American artist with worldwide fame.
She’s known for impactful visuals and energetic songwriting.
Her song “Firework” is one of her most popular works.
The track has a house music–like feel that really stands out.
The lyrics are uplifting, as if they’re giving a supportive push to those setting out on a new journey.
It’s a great song to listen to when you want to feel energized or motivated.
SINGMy Chemical Romance

The American rock band My Chemical Romance.
They’re well known for their punk and hardcore sound, and they showcase that talent to the fullest on “SING.” In fact, this song was dedicated to those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
While the melody has a super cool vibe, the lyrics are crafted to be deeply moving.
It’s a work I’d recommend to anyone who loves badass melodies.
Be sure to check it out!
