Izakaya ‘Tsuruga’Kouzai Kaori

The lyrics tell the story of a female shop owner running her place alone, who spends an entire night talking with a customer that slips under the shop curtain and happens to resemble her younger brother who died young.
It has an enka-like feel, evoking the image of a man and woman sharing their life stories on a rainy night when no other customers come.
Brothers of the FlowersSaburō Kitajima · Ichirō Toba

A single released in 2003, with Saburō Kitajima singing the older brother’s part and Ichirō Toba singing the younger brother’s part, it’s a brotherly duet song.
The lively back-and-forth makes for a spirited, masculine enka number.
It seems like it would be a hit to sing with your real brother at karaoke.
Galileo’s NightMieno Hitomi

Hitomi Mieno is a singer who’s also active as a lyricist and radio personality.
She sings anime songs and J-pop, and her vocals somehow evoke the vibe of Yumi Matsutoya.
Her song “Galileo no Yoru” (Galileo’s Night) is a piece that depicts her younger brother and parents.
Despite its fantastical melody, the lyrics paint a realistic and rather tragic picture of a sister and brother watching their parents discuss divorce.
Sister-and-brother actorsAsahna Miho

Miho Asaka is a female enka singer who, after making a splash on NHK’s popular program “NHK Nodo Jiman,” went on to debut professionally.
Her songs are striking for the persuasive power that stems from her rich expressiveness.
Among her works, one I especially recommend is the piece about a younger brother, “Ane-Ototo Yakusha” (“Sister and Brother Actors”).
As the title suggests, it’s a story centered on an older sister and her younger brother, portraying their struggle to live on after losing their mother.
Few listeners may be able to directly relate, yet I think it’s fair to say the lyrics still pierce the heart.
Wolf of the North, Tiger of the SouthMizuki Ichirō
The manga The Poem of the Baseball Fanatics, serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine in the 1970s, was also adapted into an anime, and the passionate portrayals of men intoxicated by baseball captivated living rooms across the country.
Kitano Okami, Minami no Tora (The Northern Wolf, The Southern Tiger), sung by anisong singer Ichiro Mizuki, was used as the opening theme for that anime.
The work focuses on the theme of two estranged brothers, Ken Hiura and Daisuke Oshima, known as the “Northern Wolf” and the “Southern Tiger.” Since this opening theme was used only for episodes 13 and 14 of the anime, which delve into the brothers’ story, be sure to listen to the song after checking out the anime or manga for context.
younger brotherMurashita Kōzō
Kozo Murashita was a singer-songwriter who gained popularity with catchy lyrics set to wistful melodies.
Although he passed away at a young age, his songs are still loved by people of all generations.
Among his works, the one I especially recommend is Otouto (“Younger Brother”).
Strictly speaking, it’s not a song about an actual younger brother; rather, it portrays the feelings of a woman who still longs for a lover she treated like a younger brother.
Many women may find a lot to relate to in it.

Dango Three BrothersAyumi Shigemori · Kentarō Hayami

It was originally an original number from NHK Educational TV’s “Okaasan to Issho.” Released as a single in 1999, it became an explosive hit and a social phenomenon.
The lyrics, in which the youngest third son steals all the best parts, will make you chuckle.
