[Childcare] Perfect Indoor Play Ideas for 0-Year-Olds!

Infants are curious about all kinds of things—they love to take their time observing, and when something catches their eye, they move their bodies to explore places and objects.

Because this is a time when they encounter new things every day, we want them to enjoy a variety of play activities!

Indoor play, in particular, happens in limited spaces, so it often requires creative ideas and little setups—which can make it hard to come up with activities.

For that reason, we’ve gathered lots of indoor play ideas for infants to support teachers like you.

Just imagine the smiles of the children in your class, and even the preparation will feel exciting.

Take it slow indoors and enjoy a wonderful time with the children!

Bursting into smiles! Here are some sparkling ideas from Kirakira-pon.

Many teachers may be unsure about parent–child events for infants under one year old.

How about making “parent–child bonding” the theme this time? Swaying gently to music and rhythms, and spending time in close contact can create a sense of comfort for both caregivers and children.

Since this will be the first sports day for these zero-year-old children, set the goal to encourage cheerful participation in a bright, enjoyable atmosphere.

Sensory play with zipper bags

Tactile Fun You Can See and Touch: Sensory Play with Zipper Bags 1
Sensory play with zipper bags

Put shredded cellophane ribbon into a zip bag and enjoy a sensory play activity.

Using ribbons in various colors turns it into a toy that also provides visual stimulation.

Cut several strands of cellophane ribbon to a suitable length, then shred them finely with your fingers and place them in the zip bag.

Once you’ve added a good amount, seal the bag.

To prevent accidental ingestion, make sure to close it securely with strong tape or something similarly sturdy.

Your crinkly, tactile toy is ready to play with!

Let’s try sprinkling it lightly.

Let’s cut raffia tape into small pieces and sprinkle them from above to play like it’s a colorful rain.

Children will be captivated by the way the tape flutters and by the pieces that fall to the floor! They’ll enjoy reaching out, rolling around, and having fun in their own way.

Seeing them play freely is sure to bring smiles to our faces, too.

Preparation is simple, so this is also recommended for sudden rainy-day indoor care.

Please note that raffia tape can be dangerous if children put it in their mouths, so supervise carefully and make sure to remove all pieces during cleanup.

Let’s hang balloons and play

Why not try attaching curling ribbon to balloons and hanging them from above for play? Children get super excited watching the balloons sway and bounce in the air when they touch them! If you incorporate this into childcare, prepare several so multiple children can play at the same time.

It’s also important to secure a space large enough to prevent children from bumping into each other while they play.

If they show interest in the curling ribbon, it’s also fun to tear or split it and play with the pieces.

This activity offers a variety of sensory experiences, including visual and tactile stimulation.

Let’s create a sea by adding fish.

Attach fish to blue and white plastic ribbon (suzuran tape) and transform your space into a vibrant ocean! Decorate your room and enjoy the seaside atmosphere.

First, draw fish on construction paper and cut them out.

Have the children color the fish with crayons or add stickers to make them bright and colorful.

Next, stick some plastic ribbon to a corner of the room and hang strands of blue and white ribbon.

It’s best to set them at a height the children can reach.

Finally, have the kids press the fish onto the ribbons—your splendid ocean is complete!
