[Preschool] Fun event ideas to include in the sports day for the junior (younger) class

Coming up with events for the sports day of younger kindergarteners is fun, but it can also be a bit challenging.

Especially at schools with a long history, you need to be creative so they don’t overlap with past events.

Here, we’ll introduce ideas for activities that children will enjoy.

There are events the whole class can do together, as well as ones where parents and children cooperate.

Sports day is an important occasion to feel the children’s growth.

Please use this as a reference to plan events that make the children say, “That was so much fun!”

Let’s create wonderful memories together—for both kids and adults!

Riding a Molcar

The guinea pig–shaped cars, Molcars, are a stop-motion animation made with needle-felted wool.

Some children might be big fans of Molcars.

Here, we put your child on a Molcar made of cardboard and pull it along to move.

A child who loves Molcars might be delighted to ride.

Partway through, set them down, then run to the finish line carrying them.

From that point on, instead of carrying, you could hold hands and run together or give them a piggyback.

Clothing change race

2018 Riorui and the Sports Day: Changing Clothes Race
Clothing change race

A dressing-up race where pants, T-shirts, and other clothes are placed along the course, and participants put on one item at a time as they run toward the finish.

From the start, they run and first put on pants, then a T-shirt, and finally socks, a hat, and so on.

At the finish line, a guardian will be waiting to help them put on the hat or socks, and then they can hold hands and run to the goal together.

It might be fun to add a twist at the end where the guardian also helps put on the socks or hat!

Othello

Othello

When you think of Othello, you picture a game where you sandwich your opponent’s black or white disks with your own color and flip them.

But how about trying Othello as a sports day event—not on a grid, but by using the entire field, running around until the last second and flipping disks as fast as you can? Prepare disks with different colors on the front and back, and keep flipping the opposing team’s color to your team’s color.

At the end, like in a ball-toss game, count your team’s colored disks one by one to determine the result.

Cute fisherman

Cute fisherman

A cute fisherman whose appearance running with a big net is sure to excite the crowd.

Parent and child hold the fish-catching net together and run to the spot where the fish are.

The guardian holds the net, the child catches the fish and puts them into the net, then they hold the net together again and run to the next spot.

The next spot is the fish wholesale market—here, unload the fish you caught and line them up on the platform.

After that, carry the now-empty net and head for the finish line.

You could also split teams by net color—red team and white team—and make it a parent-child relay for even more excitement!

Caterpillar Race

Doesn’t a caterpillar race, where you get inside a big tube-like “caterpillar” and aim for the goal, sound like a fun parent-child event? I recommend making the caterpillar out of cardboard—it can be big, and you can draw on it or decorate it however you like.

Before the start, the parent and child get inside the caterpillar and get into a crawling position.

At the signal, move forward on all fours as if you’re crawling.

Depending on the length to the finish line, it might be a bit tough for adults.

My First Errand

My First Errand

Let’s try a sports day event idea that even preschoolers can enjoy: the “First Errand Game.” Prepare several large, handmade vegetables and line them up in the playground.

At the start signal, have each child run out and choose their favorite vegetable.

They then run while carrying the vegetable and deliver it to the house with a roof that matches the vegetable’s color.

It’s adorable to see the children sprinting while hugging the big vegetables.

Coffee Bean Bag Jump

This is what happens in a high-rise condo when an earthquake hits...
Coffee Bean Bag Jump

How about using those large jute sacks filled with coffee beans for a parent–child event? Only the parents stand at the starting line, then they climb into a coffee sack and hop their way to the point where the children are waiting.

Once they reach the kids, the child puts a medal on the parent, and then they head for the finish together.

Carrying the child, giving a piggyback, or running hand in hand are all great options.

While they wait, the children will be cheering, “You can do it!” and that encouragement is sure to give the parents an extra boost!
