I’m Hiyoko-sensei, a former nursery school teacher from Hyogo Prefecture. Ever since I was five, my dream was to become a childcare worker, and before I knew it, 20 years had passed since I achieved that dream. Through singing and playing with the children, I kept working with the spirit of someone in their twenties, even as I increasingly felt my physical limits year by year (haha). From here on, I’d like to share helpful information carefully and thoughtfully, drawing on my on-site experience.

When do you feel that autumn has arrived?

There are so many moments that evoke autumn—like when you see or eat seasonal foods, when you admire the autumn foliage, or when you hear the gentle chirping of insects.

Following the second installment, we’re introducing more autumn craft ideas that engage the five senses.

We’re sharing lots of ideas that make the process itself fun, including crafts you can make and play with, as well as projects using a variety of techniques.

How about making sweet potatoes, grapes, and persimmons and enjoying an at-home autumn harvest? You can search for sweet potatoes under sheets of newspaper, pick persimmons from a “tree,” and harvest grapes hung up with twine and clothespins—it’s a play activity that lets you fully experience the flavors of fall.

It’s rare to harvest all these autumn treats together, so take this chance to enjoy it.

Carrying a paper bag around makes it feel like you’re shopping, which adds to the fun.

For children aged two and up, you can even start by making the fruit themselves.
