The debut song of a Japanese rock band from the 1980s
This time, I’ll introduce debut songs by Japanese rock bands from the 1980s.
The 1980s were an exciting era when many musical styles emerged—new wave, punk, visual kei, and more—making the rock scene especially interesting.
Often called the “band boom” era, this period saw a great number of distinctive bands.

BAN BAN BANKUWATA BAND

Released in April 1986, this is KUWATA BAND’s debut single.
Because the band was formed as a rock group with the stated intention of operating only for one year, and because they were dissatisfied with the quality of their first album, “NIPPON NO ROCK BAND,” released in July of the same year, the song unfortunately was not included on the album.
It’s also a song that is rarely performed even at live events under Keisuke Kuwata’s solo name.
Sugar is at that ageStardust Revue

Released in May 1981, this was Stardust Revue’s debut single.
It was also included on their first album, “STARDUST REVUE,” which was released the same day.
Although Stardust Revue now mainly performs folk and pop songs, they originally debuted as a rock band, and the track was used in a commercial for a watch manufacturer.
Just BecauseTHE JAYWALK

Released in June 1981, this is THE JAYWALK’s debut single, and it is also included on their first album, Jay-Walk, which was released on the same day.
THE JAYWALK is well known for producing numerous hit songs, including “Nani mo Ienakute… Natsu.” This track is structured much like a ballad and is sometimes performed acoustically at live events.
Rock ‘n’ Roll in a Dumped MoodTOM★CAT

Released in November 1984, this was TOM★CAT’s debut single, and it was also included on their first album, “TOM★CAT,” released in June 1985.
The track is notable for fusing the then-rare techno sound with rock, and their distinctive, futuristic costumes drew significant attention.
It ranked 18th on Oricon’s annual chart for 1985.
ASH-LAHZELDA

Released in October 1980, this is the debut single by ZELDA, pioneers of the girls’ rock band scene.
Because many of their lyrics evoked passages from literary fiction, there was a time when they were referred to as a “literary girls’ band.” This track was never included on any of their original albums and appears only on the post-breakup 2003 best-of compilation, “GOLDEN BEST/ZELDA-time spiral.”
EASTSIDE WESTSIDEZIGGY

Released in October 1987, this song is included on ZIGGY’s debut album “ZIGGY ~IN WITH THE TIMES~,” and is often regarded as their debut track because it appears as the first track on the album.
Their first single, however, was “I’M GETTIN’ BLUE,” a single cut from the album released in May 1988; on the same day, the new song “GLORIA” was also released.
stray catkodomo bando

Released in 1980, this song is included on Kodomo Band’s debut album “WE LOVE Kodomo Band,” and is considered their debut single since it appears as the first track.
Kodomo Band is a rock group fronted by Tsuyoshi Ujiki—now active as a TV personality and actor—who handles vocals and guitar; the band is said to have formed when he was in high school.
Known for its skillful guitar work, the song is also popular as a practice piece for improving guitar technique.
