Debut song by a 90s Western girls' band

The early recordings of a band are always so energetic and captivating, aren’t they? Especially when it comes to their debut single…

The technique and polish may feel a bit raw at times, but the intensity is on a whole different level.

As their career goes on, their musical style evolves, too.

That’s exactly the charm of it.

This time, I researched debut singles by ’90s Western girl bands.

Hope you enjoy it.

Debut songs by Western girls' bands from the 1990s (11–20)

Only Happy When It RainsGarbage

A 90s masterpiece where irony meets innovation.

Cut from Garbage’s self-titled debut album, released in August 1995, this single is marked by self-deprecating lyrics about only feeling happy when it rains.

While parodying the moody alternative rock that was in vogue at the time, it breathed new life into the music scene with a unique sound that fused electronica and rock.

Formed in Wisconsin, the band saw their profile rise when the music video was selected for MTV’s Buzz Bin, and the track stayed on the charts for 20 weeks.

It’s the perfect song for spending a rainy day alone or when you’re feeling nostalgic for the glittering alternative scene of the 90s.

Retard GirlHole

Raw, visceral, and furious punk rock.

In April 1990, the first recording released by the Los Angeles alternative rock band Hole was nothing less than Courtney Love’s soul laid bare.

Woven from her experiences of being bullied at school, the piece fuses piercing guitar noise with Love’s emotional vocals into a single, searing force that hits the listener straight in the heart.

After a single on Sympathy for the Record Industry, the band made their full debut with the album Pretty on the Inside in September 1991.

This work marked the first step on the brilliant path that would lead to Live Through This and Celebrity Skin.

It’s a song that offers empathy and courage to anyone who feels isolated at the margins of society.

No Way, No WayVanilla

Vanilla, a four-member girl group that burst onto the UK pop scene, made their debut on EMI Records in December 1997.

Their memorable first single was a catchy track that incorporates the familiar melody from The Muppets.

Based on Italian composer Piero Umiliani’s 1968 piece, the song blends Europop with electronic sounds to create an accessible, feel-good tune.

It achieved an impressive No.

14 on the UK Singles Chart and was featured on the compilation album Now That’s What I Call Music! 39.

A nostalgic favorite, it’s recommended for anyone looking to revisit late-’90s pop culture or enjoy a classic novelty song.
