Respect for the Aged Day: Handmade gifts they’ll love. A curated selection of simple ideas (31–40)
A card with a beautiful rose that pops out

Let’s send our gratitude to Grandma and Grandpa with a card featuring a beautiful rose! First, cut out three circles of the same size from construction paper in your favorite color.
Fold one of the circles into a shape resembling a triangle, make petal-shaped cuts, and then unfold it.
After unfolding, use a thin stick or similar tool to gently curl the edges of the petals.
For the other two circles, follow almost the same steps, but be careful: the number of petals and the way you make the cuts will differ.
Once each piece is shaped, layer them together—using any extra petals as well—and glue them onto the base card.
Finish it off by arranging them into a rose, and your card is complete!
A pop-up bouquet of gentian flowers and an owl-themed message card

How about a card featuring gentian flowers, which bloom around September when Respect for the Aged Day is celebrated, and a pop-up owl? First, cut gentian flower shapes out of navy construction paper.
Stick a star shape made with a craft punch in the center of each flower, and combine it with sepals and other parts to complete the gentian.
Fold the base sheet of construction paper in half, then make triangular creases near the top.
Attach the gentian flowers on both sides of the paper at the crease.
Next, for the owl, cut out parts from brown and white construction paper, glue them together, and attach the owl to the base.
Make sure the owl can flip up so you can write a message on the back.
Add decorations like ribbons, and it’s done!
Pop-up card

Let’s make a pop-up card using photos of your grandpa and grandma! Prepare a square sheet of construction paper, fold it twice into a square and crease, then open and fold it twice into a triangle and crease.
Place the paper like a diamond.
Paste square photos at the top and bottom sections, and two triangular-cut photos each on the left and right sections.
Prepare a rectangular sheet of construction paper big enough to hold the square-folded piece, and glue it on.
Write the recipient’s name on what becomes the front cover after folding, and you’re done! It’s also great to add not only photos but your grandchild’s drawings, too.
magnet

I want to stick them on the fridge or a whiteboard! Here are some magnet ideas.
Some grandparents might use magnetic boards to post notices and papers.
In times like that, how about making and gifting some cute magnets they can use? All you need are magnets, fabric scraps, thread, and fabric glue.
Buying fabric with a lovely design is great, but if you upcycle clothing your child has outgrown, it will feel even more heartwarming.
Flower arrangements you can make using 100-yen shop items

Flowers are a classic gift for celebrations, not just for Respect for the Aged Day.
If you use artificial flowers for the arrangement, it will last longer and let the recipient feel your congratulations for a long time, too.
Start by securing clay that fits the size of the pot, then insert and arrange the leaves and flowers into it.
Choosing flowers that match the pot’s color and design, and considering how to create a sense of spread, are also key points.
In addition to seasonal plants, it’s nice to incorporate flowers that reflect the person you’re giving the gift to.

Vegetable stamp card
These are message cards that children make by stamping vegetables with feelings of “thank you”! Adults cut the vegetables to match the theme, and the children press them onto construction paper to create their artwork.
It’s an activity suitable even for two-year-olds, so be sure to include it in your Respect for the Aged Day crafts! Once the stamped paint dries, the children can freely draw in grandpa’s or grandma’s hair and facial expressions.
Enjoy the cross-sections of the cut vegetables and the shapes of the stamped prints as you complete the project!
Grape card

This is a handmade grape card created by sticking round stickers all over it.
What you’ll need: a card, round stickers for the grape berries, a pen, and origami paper.
First, stick the round stickers, imagining them as grapes.
If 1- to 2-year-olds are making it, it’s recommended to mark guide spots with a pencil beforehand and work together.
After the stickers are in place, draw vines and leaves or attach cut pieces of origami paper to fill the empty spaces and complete the card.
