Singers, bands, and artists from Hokkaido (21–30)

Dohatsuten delivers cool, gritty rock.
Though the members come from different municipalities, they’re all from Hokkaido.
They call their music “Japanese Rhythm & Enka,” and true to that name, it features a badass rock rhythm paired with compelling melodies and frontman Masuko’s ruggedly rich vocals.
Formed in 1984, they disbanded temporarily two years later.
They debuted in 1991 with the album “Dohatsuten,” then went on hiatus again in 1996.
After resuming activities as an indie band in 1999, they made their major-label comeback in 2004 with the mini-album “Gekiken to Kan-tsubaki.” From 2009 onward, they’ve appeared at various rock festivals and grown into a popular band.
NAMENOISEMAKER

A four-piece rock band formed in Sapporo.
Armed with a sound that blends richness and speed and a piercing, heartfelt vocal style, they’ve earned support for their highly free, genre-crossing music.

Ashikaze PassMori Konomi

Konomi Mori is a powerhouse enka singer known from a young age as a leading figure in the folk music world.
Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, her vocal prowess gained nationwide acclaim, and in sixth grade she became the youngest-ever winner of the Esashi Oiwake National Competition’s youth division.
She debuted as an enka singer in 2013 with Shamisen Wataridori and won the New Artist Award at the Japan Record Awards that same year.
With her clear voice and richly expressive singing, she released a string of hits, earning the Japan Composers’ Association’s Encouragement Award at the 2017 Japan Record Awards for Nokon no Tsuki.
While inheriting the traditions of folk music, she has also received high praise for songs that incorporate contemporary arrangements.
Even after marrying sumo wrestler Akira Takayasu, her unchanging vocal brilliance continues to captivate music fans seeking new allure in traditional music.
Moonwalkmonobright

Monobright is a rock band that went on hiatus in 2017.
Except for keyboardist Hisaka Akira, who had already left the group by the time of the hiatus, all the members were from Hokkaido, though from different municipalities.
The Hokkaido-born members graduated from the same vocational school in Sapporo and began performing as official band members around 2006.
They later moved to Tokyo and made their major debut in 2007 with the single “Mikansei Riot.” Their appeal lies in a guitar sound that’s both familiar to the ear and charged with a passionate vibe.
WannabeThe Floor

A guitar rock band based in Sapporo, Hokkaido, formed in October 2012.
Their music—often described as a cutting-edge guitar rock sound—captivates listeners with high-quality songs that distill only the best elements from various eras.
Peaceful, danceable, and at times sentimental, their tracks are also hugely popular at live shows!
Get Chu!Nishijima Takahiro (AAA)

Takahiro Nishijima, a member of AAA who also performs solo under the name Nissy, is from Sapporo, Hokkaido.
He was scouted by a talent training school in Hokkaido when he was in his second year of junior high school and continued taking lessons.
He later moved to Tokyo and made his major debut in 2005 as a member of AAA with the single “BLOOD on FIRE.” In 2014, he made his solo debut under his nickname Nissy with the single “Doushiyou ka?” He has garnered popularity, especially among women, with his charming appearance and sweet singing voice.
Alongside his group and solo music activities, he has also worked as an actor, appearing in projects such as the film “Love Exposure” and the historical drama “Taira no Kiyomori.”
Fukuhara Miho

Miho Fukuhara, from Sapporo, Hokkaido, was born a quarter American.
Captivated by Mariah Carey’s music, she pursued a career in music and made her major-label debut in April 2008 as a singer-songwriter.
Her debut single “CHANGE” drew attention, and in 2009 her first major album “RAINBOW” entered the charts at No.
2.
Her powerful, soulful vocals are truly captivating.
In 2012, she also made her acting debut in the TV drama “Princess of the Frog.” In 2013, she was selected as the sixth lead vocalist of the German music group SWEETBOX, expanding her activities both in Japan and abroad.
She’s a recommended artist for fans of R&B.
