Flag designs to liven up sports festivals and field days

For sports festivals and field days, flag designs are often not only chosen from existing options but also decided by soliciting designs from classes or teams.

However, even if you want to submit a design, it can be hard to come up with ideas.

In this article, we’ll share plenty of flag design ideas recommended for sports festivals and field days.

Whether you want to stand out with color or express your class or team’s unity, you’re sure to find ideas that turn your vague concepts into a clear design! Use the ideas we introduce as inspiration while showcasing your team’s unique personality.

A flag that evokes “victory”

At sports festivals and field days, it’s important to work hard and have fun together, but the ultimate goal is to defeat the opposing team, right? With that in mind, I’d like to propose a flag design that embodies victory.

It's fine to simply use the character for “victory,” but if you prefer, there are other similar options you can choose—such as “certain victory” (必勝) or “constant victory” (常勝).

To express this passionate spirit, you could use red as the base and render the characters in a single-stroke calligraphy style.

This approach is also recommended if you want a tough, no-nonsense look.

Parodies of things like candy/snack packages

If you want to create a unique flag, parodying candy or snack packaging is a great option.

For example, everyone knows famous snacks like potato chips or “Kinoko no Yama.” So if you pull off the parody well, it’s sure to be a hit! Of course, it doesn’t have to be sweets—you can also use store signs or paintings as motifs.

It’s a great way to add a lot of originality, making it perfect for fun group brainstorming.

By the way, the key to a good parody is to obsess over the details.

Character

Designing flags with manga or anime characters is one option.

If you use famous works like Doraemon as a motif, the parents who come to watch will recognize them.

You can also go with trending manga or anime characters.

These might be harder for parents to identify, but they’ll definitely feel nostalgic when you look back later! It’s also fun to change the font to match the character or add speech bubbles or lines.

Two-character compound

Let’s express the team’s spirit using kanji and incorporate it into the flag design.

Clear, two-character compounds like “勝利” (victory) or “努力” (effort) work well, but assigning different kanji to an existing word could also be interesting from a design perspective.

By using ateji (phonetic kanji substitutions), you might be able to convey your enthusiasm for the sports festival or athletic meet in greater detail.

You could place it prominently at the center as the main element to emphasize it, or arrange it quietly at the edge of the design to express a cool, composed passion.

Red, evoking images of passion and blazing flames

When designing flags for sports festivals or school athletic meets, the color scheme can be a real dilemma.

On the flip side, once you decide on the colors, the overall direction often becomes clear.

A color I especially recommend is red, which evokes passion and blazing flames.

Red is also said to have an energizing effect! If you want to make an eye-catching flag, red is perfect.

When using red as the base, featuring the sun or flames prominently will give it a cool, striking look.

Or you could add your favorite red-colored character—it might be a great touch.

a single Chinese character

A common motif in flag designs is writing a two-character compound word.

It’s a classic choice, but it makes it easy to add originality, so it’s perfect when you’re short on ideas.

Popular two-character compounds include ones like “威風” (majestic presence) and “一閃” (a single flash).

It can also be fun to come up with your own new two-character compounds rather than using existing ones.

In either case, it’s recommended to decide on a theme first—something cool or something that reflects your team’s vibe—then start brainstorming.

And don’t just stop at the compound word; consider an illustration that matches it, too.

sneakers

A dynamic design! Here are some sneaker ideas.

Many schools likely hold sports days and athletic festivals with aims such as improving students’ physical fitness and fostering group behavior.

By featuring sneakers—athletic shoes—as the main motif, you can convey a fresh, energetic feel.

The mood can also change depending on the color scheme and sneaker design.

If there’s a specified sneaker model, highlighting its distinctive features in the illustration can create a design that students will feel attached to.
