[100-yen shop] Pom-poms made with pipe cleaners

You know those sparkly tinsel garlands from 100-yen shops that are great for party decorations? Here’s an idea for making pom-poms with them.
Since the tinsel is long, fold it in half three times.
Gather the center with a rubber band, then cut through the looped ends with scissors.
After that, adjust the strands so they fan outward.
If the lengths are uneven, trim them to match.
Tinsel comes in lots of colors, so making these in a few different shades would look lovely.
Pom-poms with different volumes

Wrap suwran tape (polypropylene ribbon) around a book or similar object several dozen times, then slide it off.
Tie the center with string to secure it, and form a loop for your hand.
Fold the tied bundle in half at the knot, then tie it again a little away from the fold.
Finally, shred the tape and you’re done! The volume and the sound when you shake it will change depending on whether you shred it roughly by hand or finely using a spiked flower holder (kenzan).
If you want more volume, shredding by hand is recommended.
If you want to make a finely shredded pom‑pom, wrap a larger amount of tape before you start.
Grip Pom-Pom

This is a pom-pom made by attaching crepe paper to the end of a stick.
Leave a margin at one edge of the crepe paper and cut the rest into thin strips, like a noren curtain.
To make it sparkle when shaken, glue sequins, beads, or rhinestones onto the paper.
Roll a thick flyer or advertisement page into a rod shape and use a hot glue gun to wrap and attach a ribbon around it to create the handle.
Apply adhesive to the uncut edge of the crepe paper and attach it by wrapping it around the stick.
This is recommended for those who want to make a unique pom-pom.

Pom-pom baton

Here’s how to make pom-pom batons that are sure to shine in a sports day dance.
The appeal is that you can easily make them with items you have at home or materials from a 100-yen shop! Cut suzuran tape (raffia tape) to a suitable length, and bundle about 15 strips each into two bunches.
Once you have two bunches with vinyl tape wrapped around one end, tape them to the ends of a sheet of newspaper, then roll the newspaper up from the edge to finish! The trick is to roll it symmetrically so it doesn’t end up lopsided.
If you use more sheets of newspaper, you can make the baton part thicker and sturdier.
You can also decorate it by wrapping it with glitter tape or washi tape!
Pom-pom wristband

Easy to use at sports days! Here are some pom‑pom wristband ideas.
You might want to make pom‑poms for a sports day but also want something kids can easily hold, right? These pom‑pom wristbands are perfect for that.
You’ll need items like thick paper (cardstock), party tinsel stems (pipe cleaners), and rubber bands.
They’re great not only as cheering goods, but also handy for dances and events! Give them a try.
tissue paper pom-pom

Here’s an introduction to making pom-poms with tissue paper.
That said, we’ll be using tissue paper from overseas rather than Japanese tissue.
Tissue paper from places like the U.S.
is thicker and more colorful than Japanese tissue, making it great for pom-poms.
Try getting some from websites that carry imported goods.
Alternatively, in Japan, thin wrapping paper is a close substitute.
A toilet paper roll core works well to hold everything together.
With some masking tape or paper clips to secure it, it’s easy to make.
