[Day Service] August Craft Ideas (1–10) That Seniors Can Enjoy
Fireworks Made from Origami Cranes

How about using origami cranes to create a unique kind of fireworks? Many people have probably made origami cranes during activities at day service centers.
We’ll arrange those cranes as parts of the fireworks’ light to create a big display.
First, make cranes using origami in various colors and patterns.
At this point, stop right before the final step of the crane—where you open it and blow air in to puff it up.
Once you’re done, place the closed (not yet opened) cranes on black paper in a radial pattern to resemble fireworks, and it’s complete! It’s also nice to stop even earlier in the folding process and use partially folded pieces.
Try experimenting with different arrangements as you create your design.
Goldfish wind chime

A wind chime that brings a cool breeze in the hot summer.
Let’s make one with a goldfish design! A recommended method uses a round cheese box and a clear plastic sheet.
Take just the rim of the cheese box and decorate it with colored washi paper or similar materials.
Cut a clear sheet to fit the rim and stick on goldfish stickers and other decorative stickers.
Once that’s done, combine it with the rim and attach a string and a paper strip (tanzaku) to finish! If you add a small bell to the tanzaku, you’ll have a wind chime that makes sound.
You can also try other methods, such as cutting a plastic bottle into small pieces or using a capsule from a gashapon machine and drawing goldfish on it.
Give it a try and make your favorite style!
Fireworks on a scratchboard
Let’s try drawing beautiful fireworks using a scratchboard! A scratchboard has layers of colors underneath a black surface, and you create your picture by scratching away the black.
You can make scratch paper from scratch, but it’s also sold at 100-yen shops, so be sure to take advantage of that.
You can scratch fireworks directly onto a square sheet, or you can pre-cut the paper into round, firework-like shapes and then add patterns—either way works! Since you’ll use a thin, pointed stick like a bamboo skewer and scratch lightly, it’s easy for seniors to try as well.
Once you’re done, display your work and launch some fireworks indoors!

Pseudo stained glass

Let’s make a cool and refreshing faux stained glass.
Real stained glass uses glass, but for our faux version we’ll use aluminum foil and a photo frame.
First, draw your favorite picture in color on the transparent film of the photo frame.
On the backing board side of the frame, spread out a piece of crumpled aluminum foil and attach it.
Place your drawing on the backing, fit everything into the frame, and you’ll have a sparkling, beautiful piece that looks like stained glass! The aluminum foil creates that shimmering stained-glass vibe.
Try drawing a summery picture and give it a go!
August calendar
Let’s make a calendar where we can fill in our fun plans for August.
You can try using various materials such as washi paper, drawing paper, or origami.
Attach the calendar section to the bottom half of the base paper.
You can handwrite the dates, or print the numbers and cut and paste them on.
Decorate the top portion with drawings or illustrations that evoke summer.
Try creating an August calendar full of events, like a summer festival at the facility or a fireworks display!
Summer Diorama

This is a summer-themed diorama made using empty boxes and illustrations.
Prepare empty boxes from snacks, towels, or gifts you received, such as year-end presents.
Next, gather illustrations that evoke summer, like sunflowers or goldfish.
You can draw them yourself or search the internet for free illustrations.
Paste one illustration on the bottom inside the box, then paste another illustration onto a sheet of plastic cut to the size of the box, and attach it to the top of the box with masking tape.
Close the lid, and it’s complete.
Watermelon lantern

These lantern decorations are perfect for Tanabata or summer festival events.
They’re designed with a watermelon motif to capture the feel of summer.
First, prepare red construction paper and draw watermelon seeds with a black marker.
Next, glue torn pieces of navy construction paper onto green construction paper to create the rind.
Attach the curved rind piece to the red paper, then roll the two sheets together into a cylinder and glue them in place.
Finally, make a handle from construction paper, attach it, and your watermelon lantern is complete.
