[For Seniors] August Wall Decoration Idea Collection
August is still in the height of the heat.
Many quintessential summer events, such as fireworks festivals, beach outings, and summer fairs, are held during this time.
We’d love for older adults—who often find it difficult to go out—to feel the season as well.
So this time, we’re sharing ideas for August wall decorations.
Seeing summer-themed decorations inside the facility may evoke memories, such as time spent with family in the past, and could serve as a form of reminiscence therapy.
Some older adults lead days with few changes and may find it hard to sense the seasons.
By feeling summer through seasonal decorations and recalling enjoyable events and activities from the past, it may help improve quality of life.
Try brightening up your facility with wall decorations that evoke the image of summer.

Stained glass-style wall decoration

Stained glass, familiar as window decorations in churches and Western-style buildings.
While real stained glass can be difficult to make, anyone can easily try a stained-glass-style wall decoration! If you’re looking for ideas for summer wall decor, try making it together with older adults.
Prepare outlines featuring summer motifs like whales and turtles, place transparent cellophane over the outline, trace the lines with a black pen, then flip it over and color with markers.
Next, crumple a sheet of aluminum foil, open it up, wrap it around a piece of thick cardboard and secure it.
Wrap the colored cellophane over the foil and tape it in place—and you’re done! Prepare a variety of summery designs and enjoy making them.
Sunflower made by rolling

Sunflowers burst into large, vibrant blooms in summer.
Let’s make cheerful sunflowers by rolling strips of paper! Prepare long, thin strips of brown construction paper for the center, yellow for the petals, and green for the calyx of the flower.
For the petal and calyx strips, pre-cut slits to create petal shapes and similar details.
Then, starting from the center, roll the paper while securing it with glue as you go.
After rolling, open out the slit sections for the petals and calyx to finish! It might be best for staff to handle the detailed work like cutting the paper, and have older adults do the rolling.
Summer wall decoration

A summer-themed wall display lets you feel the season and brightens the mood, doesn’t it? This is a wall art project that’s easy for seniors to make, too.
How about a design with sunflowers stretching energetically up toward the blue sky? For the sunflower blossoms, tissue paper or colored paper works well.
For the stems and leaves, crumple paper into a ball, open it up, and cut it into shape after giving it a wrinkled texture—this brings out a natural, plant-like feel! Using materials like crepe sheets that already have a wrinkled texture makes it easy, so give it a try.
Adding clouds, the sun, and summer insects will make the display look even more charming!
Origami Hanging Ornament: “Goldfish Swaying in the Breeze”

In the days before air conditioners, people came up with various ideas to get through the hot summer.
Wind chimes were one such idea.
Wind chimes, mobiles, and hanging ornaments swaying in a refreshing breeze create a cool-looking scene.
So let’s make a hanging goldfish decoration using colored paper.
First, use light blue and white paper to make rings about 5 cm in diameter.
Decorate circular pieces of paper in different sizes with polka dots.
The main goldfish can be made from paper, or you can use a model or small ornament—either is fine.
Thread everything onto strings in a balanced way.
Tie the three to four finished strands to a single bamboo skewer to complete it.
The contrast between the cool-colored paper ornaments and the goldfish is beautiful—highly recommended as a craft project.

Morning glory leaves and vines made with origami

This project combines not only morning glory flowers but also leaves and vines.
By carefully layering parts like flowers and leaves—crafted with clever reverse folds—you can aim for a three-dimensional, soft look.
While the flowers and leaves tend to stand out, paying close attention to the length and shape of the vines will further enhance the beauty of the morning glory.
Create the flowers and leaves with reverse folds for a three-dimensional effect, then decorate them with vines made by twisting thinly cut strips of origami paper using a simple process.
It’s also recommended to consider how the vines overlap and finish them as if they’re wrapping around other decorations.
Easy with origami! Translucent garland

With translucent origami paper, you can easily create stylish interior decor items.
A top recommendation is a translucent garland.
Start by folding summer-themed motifs with the see-through origami.
Alternatively, you can use a stapler to make charming pinwheels.
Once they’re ready, thread them onto a string to form a garland.
You can arrange them in a straight horizontal line or link them vertically—either works.
Adjust the design to suit the space where you’ll display it.
Morning glory in origami kirie (paper-cut art)

This is a simple craft where you fold an origami sheet into a small shape, cut along a curved line, and then unfold it to reveal a morning glory shape.
For morning glories, the star-like form at the center is important, so the folding steps are key to making it appear well.
The fine reverse folds may seem tricky, but it’s just a repetition of straight folds—proceed by checking which line to align with each time.
Since the finished piece has a star-shaped hole, you might place white paper behind it to make the pattern stand out.
