When talking about the appeal of avant-garde metal, you can’t overlook In the Woods…, a great band born in Norway.
Originally starting out as the death metal band Green Carnation, members who left that group went on to form In the Woods…, and in 1995 they shocked the scene with their moving debut album, Heart of the Ages.
Their songs began with a black metal sound infused with progressive elements; their music is long-form, structurally complex, and unpredictably dynamic.
With each release they added more gothic and avant-garde touches, forging a style all their own.

In the world of avant-garde metal, Sigh is a Japanese band that proudly embarks on sonic adventures beyond the boundaries of genres.
They began their career as a black metal band at a very early stage for a Japanese act, and have continued for many years centered around Mirai Kawashima, the sole remaining original member.
Their musical style can’t be summed up in a single phrase: starting from early black metal, they broadened their horizons to incorporate elements like psychedelia and world/folk music, creating a truly avant-garde and extreme sonic universe.
Though underground, they are actually highly acclaimed worldwide, with their releases praised by music media across many countries.

Dødheimsgard, the standard-bearers of avant-garde metal born in Norway, lead us on an unpredictable musical journey rooted in black metal.
Formed in 1994, their 1999 album 666 International stands as an iconic work marking their leap into experimental territory.
After numerous lineup changes and constant evolution, they opened new horizons yet again with their fifth album, A Umbra Omega, released in 2015.
Their allure lies in a uniquely DHG world where chaos and order intertwine exquisitely, overwhelming the listener.
