Some of you might be somewhat interested, but feel put off by the idea because you’re not used to listening to songs without vocals.
In this article, we introduce recommended instrumental bands from overseas for those very people.
Rather than classic instrumental-focused acts like old-school jazz or progressive rock, we highlight many new-generation groups—from post-rock and math rock since the 1990s to the contemporary jazz-adjacent scene.

Ego Death feat. Steve VaiPolyphia
It’s no exaggeration to say they’re one of the most talked-about instrumental bands of the 2020s.
Formed in Texas in 2010 around new-generation guitar heroes Tim Henson and Scott LePage, Polyphia are a four-piece boasting hybrid, progressive sounds showcased through exceptional technique—and striking looks that give them undeniable star power.
Their debut album, Muse, arrived in 2014 and became a hot topic among fans of technical instrumental bands in the progressive metal sphere.
In 2016, they released their second album, Renaissance, which also marked their Japan debut.
The following year, they made their long-awaited first visit to Japan, drawing attention for featuring the then-12-year-old prodigy guitarist Li-sa-X as the opening act.
In 2020, they guested on BABYMETAL’s album Brand New Day, steadily expanding their fan base in Japan beyond hardcore music aficionados.
Their fourth album, Remember That You Will Die, released in October 2022, features multiple vocalists in addition to their trademark instrumental sound, showcasing a refined, distinctly Polyphia style that transcends metal and prog genres and elevates the band to the next level.
It reached No.
33 on the Billboard 200, marking commercial success, and there’s little doubt their remarkable momentum will continue.

Are you familiar with a music genre called math rock? Its origins are debated, so I won’t go into them here, but while it maintains close ties with genres like post-rock and post-hardcore, its sound—featuring complex rhythmic patterns, intricate guitar phrases, and even elements like dissonance and noise—has inspired many artists.
The genre is influential enough that some Japanese bands have used math rock methodologies to break into the mainstream.
Math rock itself comes in various styles, and the American trio Covet, introduced in this article, is centered around the technically skilled and distinctive guitarist Yvette Young, a woman who masterfully employs a technique commonly known as tapping.
Yvette originally performed as a solo artist before assembling the current members to form a band, and in 2011 they even realized a Japan tour with Polyphia.
Their 2020 album Technicolor features songs incorporating Yvette’s melodic vocals, but at its core, Covet’s sound is instrumental math rock with a progressive edge, driven by a band ensemble underpinned by the trio’s advanced musicianship.
Even so, it isn’t difficult to get into—the music is elevated into something very approachable, and that’s the key point.

August 10Khruangbin
Khruangbin is a mesmerizing trio from Texas that has captivated many music aficionados with their unique, exotic, instrumental-heavy funk and soul sound, inspired by music from countries like Thailand, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
Their band name, which sounds intriguingly unusual to Japanese ears, is a Thai word meaning “flying engine/airplane,” and it was coined by the group’s sole female member and striking bassist, Laura Lee.
Discovered by the electronic music luminary Bonobo (Simon Green), the trio signed with the indie label Night Time Stories, the team behind the popular compilation series Late Night Tales, and their track “Calf Born in Winter,” included in the series, drew widespread attention.
In 2015, they released their debut album The Universe Smiles Upon You, influenced by Thai music; in 2018, they followed it with their acclaimed second album Con Todo El Mundo, said to be inspired by Spanish and Middle Eastern music.
It was around this time that Khruangbin became known in Japan as well: in March 2019 they made their long-awaited first visit, with tickets selling out immediately, and that summer they quickly boosted their profile further with a performance at Fuji Rock.
In 2020, Khruangbin expanded their musical range with Mordechai, an ambitious work that incorporates vocals on most tracks, marking yet another step in their evolution.

EsperanzaHermanos Gutiérrez
Based in Switzerland, the Ecuadorian brothers who paint vast landscapes with two guitars are Hermanos Gutiérrez.
The duo of older brother Estevan Gutiérrez and younger brother Alejandro Gutiérrez has cultivated a style since 2015 that’s often described as “the guitar sings.” In 2022, they released the album “El Bueno y el Malo” on Dan Auerbach’s label, and their June 2024 follow-up “Sonido Cósmico” expands their world from the desert to outer space.
Their music, endowed with a cinematic power to evoke imagery—evident in short films that have been nominated for awards—invites listeners on an extraordinary journey through wordless dialogue.
Highly recommended for anyone seeking immersive sounds away from the hustle and bustle!
White CrayonAthletic Progression
Athletic Progression, based in Aarhus, Denmark, is a trio that fuses jazz and hip-hop.
Their sense for recreating that “wonky” J Dilla-esque groove in live performance is simply stunning.
They drew attention in 2019 with the release of their EP Dark Smoke.
In 2021, they released the album cloud high in dreams, but heavy in the air.
Recorded over the course of a week in Copenhagen in 2019, the album intriguingly developed songs from iPhone memos.
Their talent is proven—with nominations for jazz awards—and they come highly recommended for fans of UK jazz and beat music.
DjedTortoise
Among the groups that pushed rock beyond its 1990s development—the so‑called post-rock—Tortoise from Chicago stands out as one of the most important, continuing to influence many artists even into the 2020s.
In addition to the extraordinary musicianship and band ensemble of its multi-talented members, who come from diverse backgrounds like hardcore and jazz, the band drew attention for innovative methods such as using hard-disk recording to edit audio on a computer—remarkable at the time in the 1990s.
As the face of the scene, they became closely associated with Chicago’s artists and bands, who were dubbed the “Chicago Sound School.” It’s extremely difficult to sum up Tortoise’s music in a single phrase: they move freely across genres—from jazz and prog to punk and hip-hop—and on some works even return to analog techniques like tape recording, continually pursuing a unique sound.
In the truest sense, they are a consistently progressive, innovative group.
It’s of course great to start with their classic albums that introduced the concept of post-rock, like 1996’s masterpiece “Millions Now Living Will Never Die” or the further-evolved 1998 “TNT.” But in terms of accessibility, checking out 2001’s “Standards,” which leans more on live band interplay, or the more melodious 2004 release “It’s All Around You,” is also a fine choice!
MAGIC!Arch Echo
Based in Nashville, Arch Echo has been attracting attention since their formation in 2016 with a sound that fuses progressive metal and jazz.
The five-piece group, all graduates of Berklee College of Music, has been highly active—releasing the EP “3X3: Catalyst” in 2025—and is well-known among instrumental music fans.
They also arranged music for the popular game Genshin Impact’s concert, so gamers may already be familiar with them.
Their musical style features dazzling virtuosity paired with catchy melodies, and even the legendary George Benson has praised guitarist Adam Rafowitz’s skills.
Balancing technical performance with accessibility, their tracks are an easy recommendation for those new to instrumental music.
