Practice songs for beginner electric bass players

The bass is often described as the unsung hero, and it tends to be seen as a bit understated.

Some of you might have actually picked up an electric bass and gotten bored practicing root notes in an 8-beat pattern over and over.

In this article, we’ve researched songs that are relatively easy even for beginner bassists to play, while also letting you experience how fun and interesting the bass can be.

We’ve focused mainly on Japanese tracks across different eras, with a few classic Western songs included as well.

If you play bass while feeling the groove within a band ensemble, you’ll surely expand your toolkit as a player.

Give it a try!

Practice Songs for Beginner Electric Bass (71–80)

HOWEVERGLAY

In the 1990s, the golden age of J-POP, one of GLAY’s signature songs that became a massive hit was “HOWEVER.” Beyond the sheer brilliance of the composition, you’ll realize when you try covering it with a band that its key lies in a band ensemble that differs from straightforward rock.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the unique groove is driven by JIRO’s bass.

The reggae-tinged bass line, which makes clever use of rests, may initially confuse beginners who usually only practice 8-beat songs.

Rather than focusing on complex fingering or technique, what matters is how well you can create that distinctive feel.

Use this song to learn a groove that emphasizes off-beats and sixteenth notes!

In live houses in the 1990s, there was almost always at least one Nirvana or Green Day cover band.

Back then, if you mentioned Green Day, “Basket Case” was the song most bands would cover, but since the 2000s, it might actually be “American Idiot” that gets covered more often.

Released in 2004, it became a massive hit and is one of Green Day’s signature songs of the 2000s.

Since Green Day’s sound is rooted in punk, the straightforward, no-frills arrangements are easy for beginner instrumentalists to play.

The bass mostly sticks to root notes; to bring out the song’s sharp, driving feel, focus on anchoring the bottom end solidly while keeping up with the brisk tempo without lagging.

This is a song by the American punk band Green Day.

The tempo is moderate, and the bass line doesn’t move around much, so it should be easy to play.

The other instruments are simple as well, so it’s recommended for bands formed by beginners.

Practice Pieces for Beginner Electric Bass (81–90)

Don’t CryGuns N’ Roses

Guns N’ Roses, whose original members recently reunited.

It’s a slow ballad.

The original is in half-step-down tuning.

Dropping a half step completely changes the vibe.

It’s a good experience to learn that difference.

For slow songs, keeping a steady tempo is crucial.

In the chorus, don’t let the bass rush from getting too hyped—stay locked in with the others.

The ChickenJaco Pastorius

If anything, with this piece I’d like you to learn its structure and also appreciate how amazing the bassist Jaco Pastorius is.

The structure is simple, but the bass playing at each turn is so varied that you wouldn’t think it’s over the same chords.

I want you to internalize that feeling.

Fieldy from Korn plays a pretty unique style of bass, so it can feel intimidating at first, but once you dive in, it’s more playable than you might expect.

This track is all about heavy low-end slap, but there are only two patterns in the phrase.

Plus, it’s just the riff, so you don’t need to worry about chord changes.

The slapping motion can be tough until your hands get used to the balance, but for slap, it’s relatively easy.

What you do need is endurance—almost like athletic training.

Also, a five-string bass tuned down low is essential.

From L’Arc, it’s Hanaa.

To be honest, it’s a bit difficult, but among L’Arc’s songs I thought it was on the easier side.

The bassline, crafted to be singable, is also good study for creating your own basslines in the future.

It’s challenging, but well worth attempting.
