If you’re a student bassist, I bet many of you are thinking of using spring break to get in a lot of bass practice.
If you’re in a light music club or band circle, you’ll be welcoming new juniors, and if you’re starting as a new student in April, you’ll be making new friends—so you probably want to show off some cool bass playing, right?
In this article, I’ll introduce a bunch of recommended practice songs for those of you who want to drill bass thoroughly over spring break.
They range from very easy to slightly challenging, so definitely give them a try and level up!

Guitar, Loneliness, and the Blue Planetkessoku bando

“Guitar, Loneliness and Blue Planet” by Kessoku Band from the anime Bocchi the Rock! This song is a recommended practice piece centered on simple phrases that mainly use eighth-note root playing.
The melody played on the high frets in the C section is a bit tricky, but the rest is simple, making it perfect for foundational practice.
One point to watch out for: in the final chorus, the phrase changes to a busy line that requires quick shifts to higher registers, so be careful not to make mistakes there!
Charlesbarūn

At first listen it seems difficult, but as you play you’ll realize that the fingering follows patterns.
This song is by Balloon, a Vocaloid producer who also works as singer-songwriter Keina Suda, and it was released in 2016.
It sparked a major movement, especially on video platforms.
Because the tempo is fast and the rhythm is lively, keeping up can be tough at first.
However, since the fingering is pattern-based and the finger motions repeat, your body will eventually memorize them.
Start by lowering the BPM and practicing slowly.
Marigoldaimyon

For those who are thinking about starting bass, I recommend Aimyon’s “Marigold.” It doesn’t use difficult techniques and is mostly played with root notes, making it perfect for basic training such as moving along the fretboard and practicing rhythm.
Once you get used to it, try playing it with your friends.
Only for you, clear skiesYorushika

Many people probably feel like trying to play Yorushika’s songs on bass.
“Just a Sunny Day for You” is an easy song even for beginners.
The bass line played from the A verse to the B verse alternates between downbeats and upbeats, so pay attention to keeping time as you play.
It’s simple, so once you get used to it, it should become fun.
cloudy skyDOES

This is a song I can recommend to anyone who’s thinking about starting a band.
It’s one of the signature tracks by the rock band DOES, released in 2008 as their sixth single.
It was used as the opening theme for the anime Gintama and became a hit.
The masculine sound arrangement is insanely cool.
And the guitar, bass, and drums are all very simple to play.
If you’re really looking for a practice piece to start from scratch, make sure to learn this one first.
Drunkenness UnknownKanaria

Many beginner bassists may feel uncomfortable with phrases that use rests to cut the sound off precisely.
For those players, I highly recommend Vocaloid producer Kanaria’s “Yoidoreshirazu.” The song is built around rest-heavy phrases centered on eighth notes at a mid-tempo, making it perfect for focused practice on tricky rests.
Plus, there are occasional sixteenth-note passages that require finer fingerwork, so it’s great training not just for beginners but for intermediate players as well!
CHAINSAW BLOODVaundy

Vaundy’s “CHAINSAW BLOOD” is perfect for practicing syncopation—a technique that links weak and strong beats to add rhythmic variation.
In this song, the offbeat of the fourth eighth note ties into the downbeat of the next measure to form a quarter note, so the key is to hold that exact length firmly.
When you’re not used to it, it’s common to rush the offbeat before the downbeat, so practice while clearly feeling the “taan-ta-ta” rhythm.
