Master one song over summer vacation! Recommended practice songs to level up your bass (91–100)
YYZRush

This song starts in an odd time signature, and just when you think there’s a break, a barrage of 16th notes kicks in.
There are bass fill-ins in every section, making the difficulty quite high.
Even with a lot of practice, it takes time to play it perfectly.
However, once you can play it, your skill level will skyrocket.
Live in the present.Saucy Dog

Speaking of summer, it also strongly evokes sports, doesn’t it? You might even get a chance to cheer someone on with a song.
In that case, I’d like to recommend Saucy Dog’s “I Will Live in the Present.” It was written for the 2023 high school soccer season and portrays the beauty of hard work and bonds with teammates.
With its fast tempo, it’s perfect for bassists who want to show off some dazzling fingerwork.
It’s not easy, but that’s exactly why it looks so cool if you can pull it off.

RoxanneThe Police

The Police’s “Roxanne” is a recommended song for beginner to intermediate bass players.
This track features a muted technique called brushing.
Since keeping a steady rhythm is crucial, practice with a metronome to maintain consistent tempo and timing.
REVERSIUVERworld

This song, used as the theme for the anime film Blue Exorcist: The Movie, was released by UVERworld in 2012.
The tight, intricate picking in the first half and the slightly jazzy, rockabilly-like section before the chorus dramatically change the mood, which is really cool.
A key practice point is to switch your groove between these sections.
In the first half, don’t just follow the tempo—create the groove by articulating the fine phrases.
In the pre-chorus, it sounds best if you play each note as long as possible, holding it right up to the edge.
gentianWANIMA

A three-piece rock band, WANIMA, fires up fans mainly through their live shows with high-velocity melodic hardcore sounds and catchy harmonies.
This song is included on their third album, COMINATCHA!!, released in 2019, and drew attention again when it was used as an insert song in the 2022 TV drama Nanba MG5.
With a relaxed tempo and relatively few bass notes, the bass part alone isn’t very difficult; however, if you’re aiming to play and sing like the original, be careful not to let the vocals throw off your playing.
In particular, the latter part features melodies that are close to ad-libbed “fakes,” so practice to keep the bass lines steady.
Rocket Divehide with Spread Beave

One of hide’s finest songs.
Despite its high overall quality—with tight accents and an intro phrase that climbs chromatically—it’s packed with elements you can really dig into once you memorize the patterns.
I may be biased as a fan, but this is definitely a track I’d love to see you cover.
agilityRega

This is a track by rega, one of Japan’s leading instrumental bands.
In this song, the bass particularly stands out and sounds really cool.
The phrase that starts right from the intro is something you’ll definitely want to copy.
It’s packed with intricate sixteenth-note lines, making it a great piece for practice.
Try practicing while paying close attention to ghost notes and dynamics.
