While the genre itself might not be something most people encounter unless they’re avid music fans, in reality many famous bands and artists—familiar even to casual listeners—have been influenced by the blues and expressed it in their own form of rock.

Stop Messin’ RoundFleetwood Mac

If your image of Fleetwood Mac is of a band with a glittering résumé—Grammy wins, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and massive hits of polished soft rock like their masterpiece Rumours—you’ll likely be surprised when you listen to the album being introduced here, Mr.
Wonderful.
Formed in the UK in 1967, Fleetwood Mac was built around guitarist Peter Green, who had also been a member of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, and drummer Mick Fleetwood; in their early days, they played blues rock centered on Green’s guitar.
Released in 1968 as their second album, Mr.
Wonderful is composed of sounds that fully showcase their admiration for the blues, with the twin guitars’ soulful, “weeping” playing exemplifying the essence of British blues spirit.
There are tracks with horn sections as well, making it a relatively accessible listen.
By the way, the half-naked man on the cover is none other than Mick Fleetwood himself!
I’m Not SureJohnny Winter

While deeply inheriting the influence of the blues, Johnny Winter built a world of his own with blisteringly fast fingerpicking and fiery slide-guitar technique.
His 1969 masterpiece Second Winter is a landmark album that showcases his talent to the fullest.
Released in the innovative format of a three-sided LP, the album includes covers of songs by Percy Mayfield and Chuck Berry.
Especially noteworthy is his slide-guitar cover of Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited, whose overwhelming virtuosity captivates listeners.
Letting you feel the primal soul of the blues while delivering the dynamism of rock, this album is a must-listen for anyone wanting to experience the essence of blues rock.
Sookie, SookieSteppenwolf

Steppenwolf, originally The Sparrows—a blues rock band formed in Toronto, Canada—became a four-piece group that began activity in 1967 after relocating to San Francisco.
Known for hits like “Born to Be Wild,” which was featured in the classic American New Wave film Easy Rider and has been covered by many musicians and bands, they delivered blues rock and psychedelia with a hard-edged sound, exerting a major influence on later hard rock and heavy metal.
The album highlighted here, Steppenwolf Live, was released in 1970.
Although a live album, it was edited and arranged much like a greatest-hits collection packed with their popular tracks.
It’s highly regarded by fans for its dynamic live performances and signature songs, and it also serves as an excellent introduction to the band.
SlowhandEric Clapton

“Slowhand” is an album released by Eric Clapton in 1977.
The title “Slowhand” reportedly came from the fact that, despite the incredible sound he produced, his fingers didn’t seem to be moving much, so he was called “Slowhand” at the time.
It’s an album you can listen to with ease.
