Cute Homemade Cakes to Make for Children's Day (11–20)
Locomotive cake
You can make it without an oven! Let me introduce a locomotive cake you can cook in the microwave.
Maybe you want to try making a homemade cake but don’t have an oven at home.
If so, this microwave-made locomotive cake is perfect for you.
Use a microwave cake kit and arrange it into the shape of a locomotive! The idea of using round biscuits to represent the driving wheels of a steam locomotive is brilliant, isn’t it? Give it a try!
Koinobori decoration cake

Introducing a customizable carp streamer (koinobori) decoration cake.
Prepare strawberries, kiwifruit, sugar, whipped cream, a chocolate pen, and a sponge cake, then let’s get started.
Cut the sponge to make the body and tail.
Once you’ve shaped it like a koinobori, spread whipped cream on top, thinly slice the strawberries and kiwifruit, and arrange them to create the scales.
The key is to place the fruit so there are no gaps! Draw the face with a chocolate pen, and it’s done! It looks like a fun project to make with kids, too!
Anpanman Children’s Day Cake

For Children’s Day, how about preparing a cake that kids will love? This time, we’ll introduce a cake shaped with the theme of Anpanman’s carp streamer.
First, prepare a piece of parchment paper cut to the same size as your cake pan, and a thick, transparent sheet such as a food storage bag.
Trace the character’s outline onto the parchment paper, then dip the tip of a toothpick into warmed chocolate and follow the lines to fill them in.
Next, use food coloring and whipped cream to add color.
After you apply each color, chill it in the freezer so it sets—this makes the process much smoother.
Once all the colors are done, remove the parchment paper, fit it into the cake pan, and pour in whipped cream.
Chill it in the freezer again.
When it’s well chilled, place it onto the cake sponge and peel off the food storage bag sheet to finish.
It’s also fun to discuss with your child and make it using their favorite character.

Many children love the film My Neighbor Totoro, don’t they? So how about making a cake inspired by the popular character Totoro? This Totoro cake uses a steamed cheesecake as the base and is coated with chocolate and more.
Try making it while imagining his adorable look from the movie.
It’s also fun to add playful touches, like decorating around it with strawberries for a festive look or making soot sprites (Makkuro Kurosuke) out of chocolate cookies!
sushi cake

For those who aren’t fond of sweets, I recommend a sushi cake.
Arrange white rice—or vinegared rice—into a cake-like shape, then layer the toppings on.
For toppings, you can choose typical sushi items like salmon, or familiar ingredients such as cucumber, cheese, and ham.
If you pick ingredients with color balance in mind, it will look gorgeous.
It’s quite hearty, so it could also serve as a main dish for Children’s Day.
Using a store-bought Swiss roll

Some of you may want to enjoy making cakes with your children but find it hard to do so because of time or space constraints.
In that case, here’s an idea: decorate a store-bought Swiss roll.
Buy a slightly larger roll cake and top it with fruit or draw illustrations with chocolate pens.
Since you don’t need to use heat or knives, it’s safe even when enjoying it with small children.
It could also be fun to make the roll cake look like a carp streamer or a favorite character.

Save time and money at once! Here’s an idea for a carp streamer (koinobori) cake you can make for just 500 yen.
Have you ever been so busy that you suddenly realize, “Wait, it’s Children’s Day today!” and start to panic? This koinobori cake idea is perfect for those moments.
