Masterpieces to listen to on a cloudy day

There are countless songs that perfectly suit clear blue skies, unending rain, or swirling snow, but surprisingly, it’s hard to find ones that fit a cloudy day.

Here’s a playlist that matches that overcast, not-quite-clear, not-quite-sunny, but comfortably mild kind of weather.

Masterpieces to Listen to on Cloudy Days (71–80)

Rain, then Sunshine Hallelujahyuzu

The 39th single by the hugely popular folk duo Yuzu.

It is also known as the theme song for the NHK morning drama series “Gochisousan.” Based on Kazuya Sato’s “Sakura-iro no Waltz” and incorporating various inventive touches—such as quoting the second movement of Dvořák’s Symphony No.

9 “From the New World” in the interlude—it is an expansive, grand composition.

Sunny with occasional cloudsSukima Suichi

Sukima Switch / Sunny with occasional clouds from TOUR 2012–2013 “DOUBLES ALL JAPAN”
Sunny with occasional cloudsSukima Suichi

A song by Sukima Switch that likens life to the weather.

There are sunny days and cloudy days, but it’s a positive song about walking on together anyway.

Its simplicity makes it very easy to sing.

Try imitating Takuya Ohashi’s distinctive singing style when you sing it.

I should be able to fly (in the sky).supittsu

A single by Spitz released in 1994.

Although its initial sales were lackluster, it gained popularity after being used as the theme song for the TV drama “Hakusen Nagashi,” and went on to sell over a million copies.

The expressive lyrics by vocalist Masamune Kusano and his pleasant, soothing voice are particularly appealing.

pubertyChaamii Sumairu & Guriin Heddo

An underrated gem by the folk-rock band “Charming Smile & Green Head.” It’s a song that vividly captures the feelings of a young person trying to break out of their moratorium period, brilliantly expressing the push and pull between the urge to break through the overcast skies and the pent-up frustration of not being able to do so.

Like the clouds, like the windSano Ryōko

It’s the theme song of the TV anime “Like the Clouds, Like the Wind.” The original work is Ken’ichi Sakemi’s debut novel “Kokyu Shosetsu,” the first winner of the Japan Fantasy Novel Award.

The song’s lyrics depict a poignant unrequited love.

It’s truly a track that epitomizes a Showa-era anime song.

The sky of TokyoMaeno Kenta

Dec. 14, 2012 Kenta Maeno “Tokyo no Sora” (Tokyo Sky)
The sky of TokyoMaeno Kenta

This is a song by singer-songwriter Kenta Maeno.

It’s about a man living in Tokyo after breaking up with his girlfriend.

It’s a moving masterpiece that captivates you even with just a single guitar.

In the film “Live Tape,” it was performed at the end on the Inokashira Park live stage, and it left a strong impression.

Like a white cloudsaruganseki

Ariyoshi Hiroiki, who is now a staple on variety shows, released this debut song back in his Saruganseki days.

After undergoing a grueling hitchhiking journey on the variety program “Susume! Denpa Shonen,” Saruganseki created this classic that sings of a traveler’s feelings.

The lyrics and music were written by Fumiya Fuji of The Checkers.
