Chances are, many people don’t have a clear image.
To put it simply, contemporary music is the modern version of classical music, with a broader musical range than traditional classical.
Since it’s an abstract category, thinking of it as modern classical is perfectly fine.

SkinRebecca Saunders

Rebecca Saunders is a London-born composer who has gained popularity for her advanced compositions using electronic instruments.
She is known for her highly avant-garde musical style, and among many works of contemporary music, hers are particularly noted for their complex structures that are difficult to grasp.
One of her most celebrated masterpieces is ‘Skin.’ The piece enjoys enduring popularity in Germany, and in 2019, her achievements were recognized when she became the first woman to receive the Sequenz Music Prize.
WTC 9/11Steve Reich

Contemporary music includes a derivative genre called minimal music.
Minimal music is a genre that keeps musical motion to a minimum and relies on frequent repetition of patterns.
Steve Reich is known as a representative composer of minimal music.
His piece “WTC 9/11” is regarded as one of his signature works, and its distinctive structure—evoking the mechanical sounds of airplanes—leaves a strong impression.
Lost HighwayOlga Neuwirth

Composer Olga Neuwirth is from Austria.
A graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, she specialized in dramatic fields and, while still a student, presented a thesis on the music for the film “L’amour à mort.” Since beginning her career as a composer, she has released several operas.
Among them, the most famous is “L’amour à mort.” Originally a film by David Lynch, it was staged in 2003 and attracted considerable attention.
Its striking use of dissonance creates melodies that evoke a sense of fear.
HamletBrett Dean

Brett Dean is an Australian composer who is also highly regarded as a violinist.
He studied under musicians such as Elizabeth Morgan and John Curro at the Queensland Conservatorium, graduating at the top of his class in 1982.
Among his works, a well-known staple is ‘Duet for Cello and Orchestra.’ Compared to much contemporary music, it features more harmony, making it accessible even to listeners who are not accustomed to the genre.
In conclusion
Contemporary music stems from the classical tradition, but compared to classical works, it often emphasizes silence and deliberately incorporates dissonance, giving me the impression that its expressive range is broader than that of classical music.
At Rug Music, in addition to contemporary music, we also feature genres like contemporary jazz.
