If I Could Play the PianoNishida Toshiyuki

The single “Ii Yume Miro yo” (“Have a Good Dream”) was used as the theme song for a 1981 drama starring Toshiyuki Nishida.

It was originally the A-side, but because “Moshimo Piano ga Hiketa nara” (“If Only I Could Play the Piano”), which was featured in the same drama, received such a strong response, the A and B sides were later swapped and the single was reissued.

Both songs have lyrics written by Aku Yū.

BATHROOMJUDY AND MARY

Known by the abbreviations “JudyMari” and “JAM,” JUDY AND MARY is a four-piece rock band that disbanded in 2001 yet still inspires constant calls for a reunion.

“BATHROOM,” included as the B-side to their 13th single “LOVER SOUL,” is a breezy rock tune that was featured in a commercial for Shiseido’s “Nouv Nail Color.” Its pop-rock ensemble, distinct from the grand and tender feel of “LOVER SOUL,” creates a superb contrast with the A-side.

It’s a cute number that perfectly captures the quintessential JudyMari image and is also included on their best-of album.

SEVENTH HEAVENPerfume

Perfume is a music unit that has won fans across a wide range of demographics with their distinctive dance performances and powerful live shows.

“SEVENTH HEAVEN” is the B-side to their fifth single “Polyrhythm,” the song that brought Perfume widespread recognition, and it was used as the ending theme for the local variety show Kyushu Seishun Ginko.

It opens with piano and acoustic guitar, and the arrangement—blending into their trademark techno sound—is particularly striking.

With its airy melody and four-on-the-floor beat, it’s a quintessential Perfume track that sticks in your ears.

This is the B-side track to “Ame de Koi o Shite,” a single released in 1981 by Niagara Triangle, a unit led by Eiichi Ohtaki and featuring Motoharu Sano and Makoto Sugii.

While Hiromi Ohta’s cover of “Saraba Siberia Tetsudō” is well known, this version sung by the composer himself, Ohtaki, also has a distinctive charm.

Among Seiko Matsuda’s many hit songs, there are quite a few people who especially love “Red Sweet Pea.” In fact, “Red Sweet Pea” was composed by Yumi Matsutoya (Yuming), and this piece is its B-side.

It’s a hidden gem that often gets radio play around graduation season.

After the ceremony ends, on the way home, there’s that person you’ve always liked, naturally walking beside you.

With spring approaching and the two of you about to go your separate ways, the image vividly emerges of a girl quietly saying goodbye in her heart to the one she loves.

This is the B-side track to the single “Kimi no Yowasa,” released in 1988.

The lyrics were written by Misato Watanabe, and the music was composed by Senri Oe.

“10Years” is also included on the 1988 album “ribbon,” and the composer Senri Oe did a self-cover of the song on his 2003 album “home at last—Senri Sings Senri—.”

I love youkome kome CLUB

Kome Kome Club is a nine-member band that continues to captivate listeners with entertainment that fuses underground sensibilities and pop musicality.

“Aishiteru,” which was included as a double A-side single with their 13th single “Kimi ga Iru Dake de,” a track that sold nearly three million copies, remains a fan favorite despite not appearing on any original album.

Its sentimental arrangement, which foregrounds the vocals, suggests a depth of musicality different from the band’s typically glamorous image.

It’s an emotional number that you’ll want to keep listening to.
