[Comedy] Summary of Recently Popular Bits and Gags
Last updated:

In recent years, doesn’t it feel like there’s been a sudden surge in comedians using YouTube and TikTok?

Of course, TV variety shows are still hilarious, but the current environment where you can laugh easily and casually through your smartphone—doesn’t that feel like the best?

If you’re reading this, you probably have a favorite comedian too.

In this article, I’ve put together a roundup of the latest gag trends and buzzworthy bits.

Use it as a trend check and be sure to read through to the end!

[Comedy] Summary of Recently Popular Bits and Gags (1–10)

forgetfulness

Inoue’s aging and Ishida’s sharp strategy shine in the new bit “Forgetfulness.”

NON STYLE is a comedy duo beloved by a wide range of generations.

Their rapid-fire routines—driven by Akira Ishida, the quick-witted joker, and Yusuke Inoue, the narcissistic straight man—will have you laughing nonstop.

What’s remarkable about them is that even with their long careers, they continue to release fresh material.

Their YouTube channel regularly features new sketch videos.

For example, in a bit titled “Forgetfulness,” Ishida passionately lectures about how he himself never forgets things, targeting Inoue, who’s been getting more forgetful with age.

The sheer torrent of talk alone makes it hilarious.

Hoi-renchan

Hoi-renchan

Without prior knowledge, you won’t know what’s going on—but you’ll still end up laughing.

This is a video about “Hoi Renchan.” Have you ever watched Fuji TV’s new type of show where contestants only sing the chorus, “Chidori no Oni Renchan”? Many people know the comedian Hoi Kenta for his impressions of Sanma Akashiya, and the episode he appeared in became a hot topic.

Since he can’t hit high notes, Hoi sings with the key lowered by about ten steps, which had the hosts Chidori and Kamaitachi in stitches.

What I want to introduce here is a slightly complicated video: comedian Hollywood Zakoshisho doing an impression of Hoi on YouTube.

No matter how many times he tries, Zakoshi keeps “exploding,” and the more you watch, the funnier it gets!

Power!

Nekoyama Kinniku-kun appears in an absurd commercial where the conversation consists only of “Power” and “Yaa”!?
Power!

The familiar catchphrase “Power!” shouted loudly is Nakayama Kinnikun’s signature one-shot gag.

Since he performs solo, there’s no partner to play the straight man and follow up, so after he yells “Power!” the vibe always becomes a bit awkward.

That escalating awkwardness—and Kinnikun’s face gradually turning anxious because he’s not sure how to wrap it up—is the gag itself.

“Hey! You there, muscles! Are you gonna do it? Or not? Which is it?!” is another one of his staple bits.

Even after leaving his old home agency Yoshimoto Kogyo in 2021, Nakayama Kinnikun has kept up his winning streak—expectations are higher than ever!

Arunashi quiz

A fun “Aru-nashi Quiz” turns into a sharp-tongued manzai routine! The 2022 M-1 Grand Prix champions, Westland, are at their best when they do bits based on the “Aru-nashi Quiz.” When asked, “What do idols have that actors don’t?” the straight man, Iguchi, snaps back, “Ambition—actors don’t have a shred of ambition!!” It’s exhilarating how Iguchi nails those common feelings we all have but can’t easily say out loud, firing them off in punchy, short lines.

It makes you want to hear even more of their edgy material.

Their bit “There’s no dream in R-1” even trended on Twitter!

Yūjirō

The YouTube channel “Gyarie Record Channel,” known for surreal video concepts like “Kenshi Yonezu Doing Mitt Work” and “Late-Night Hype: 10-Pull Contest for ★2 Characters,” has been going viral.

They frequently release content based on manga and anime—such as Folgore from Zatch Bell! and characters from Toy Story—and one of their popular series features a bit about Yujiro Hanma from Baki.

In it, Yujiro, known as the “strongest creature on Earth,” suddenly shows up on a snowy field or in someone’s home.

The more familiar you are with the original work, the funnier it gets.

This hilarious sketch, which you can also watch on JaruJaru’s official YouTube channel JaruJaru Island, is called “The Guy Who Can’t Trust His Friend.” Here’s how the skit goes: Two very close friends meet at a café.

They order drinks, and Fukutoku gets up to go to the bathroom.

Instead of leaving his big wallet on the table, he picks it up and takes it with him.

The second time he gets up, he remembers he forgot his wallet, so he comes back to grab it.

It’s all a setup for Goto’s punchline, “Just how little do you trust me?!”—and the timing is perfect.

It’s a gem that really showcases JaruJaru’s keen eye for observation.

labyrinth

If you like Vocaloid songs, you’ll probably recognize it as soon as you hit play! It’s a song-gag parody of Matryoshka, the massive hit released by Kenshi Yonezu under his Vocaloid producer name, Hachi.

It was performed on the variety show Ariyoshi no Kabe in the “Break Artist Championship” segment, with the comedy duos Kitsune and A Masso dancing and singing.

The way they weave in the theme of VTubers really makes it feel like cutting-edge comedy! It’s a triumph of imagination, and I’m excited to see what Labyrinth does next.
