The Shocking Soup of Virgin Mary: The Magnificent DesireMakita Supōtsu presents Fly or Die

This is a song that makes you laugh at the unexpected gap between a decadent visual-kei worldview and the homely theme of curry! It’s by the band led by Makita Sports, Makita Sports presents Fly or Die.

Released digitally in January 2014 as their debut, it’s a track born from the popular segment “Comedians’ Serious Song Championship” on the TV Tokyo variety show Godtongue.

What’s sung over the heavy band sound isn’t pitch-black darkness or despair, but—surprise—an appetite for soup curry.

The contrast between the authentic performance and the ridiculous lyrics is the best.

If you listen to it when you’re feeling down, its gloriously over-the-top silliness is sure to lift you up!

Curry and riceEndō Kenji

Kenji Endo—known as Enken—was a standout figure in Japan’s folk boom of the late 1960s.

His early song “Curry Rice” is a legendary masterpiece in the history of Japanese folk.

It paints scenes of curry, the people and cats around it, and everyday landscapes, capturing the faded atmosphere, loneliness, and imagery of Showa-era Japan in a single track.

What kinds of scenes did you imagine when you listened to “Curry Rice”? It’s a timeless song I hope younger generations will also hear.

If you were watching in real time back then—as I was—you could never forget the shock when this song started playing in the anime itself.

“Curry no Uta,” an insert song in the wildly popular series Minami-ke’s third season, Minami-ke Okaeri, is sung by the lovably hopeless pretty boy Hosaka—who radiates a uniquely peculiar presence in the show—and the youngest of the main sisters, Chiaki.

In any case, it’s fair to say this is Daisuke Ono’s one-man showcase in his role as Hosaka, and the fact that the song was born from Ono himself ad-libbing on top of lyrics written in the original manga is just fantastic.

As for why the lyrics are composed of curry spices—I’ll leave that unexplained here.

Please watch the series and feel for yourself the well-meaning kindness of Hosaka, who ends up being called the “Curry Fairy” by Chiaki!

“Curry no Uta” (The Curry Song) is included on Kururi’s third album, TEAM ROCK.

Amid an album with strong electronic elements, this song is performed simply as a piano-and-vocal piece.

Beloved by many, it’s known as a hidden gem.

It’s quintessential Kururi—suited to overcast skies—yet it carries a gentle warmth, even a sense of palpable temperature.

It’s a track you’ll want to sink into, savoring the lyrical world at a relaxed pace.

And of course, it makes you crave curry.

NEWS captivates with their straightforward songs and their cool, comedic tracks alike.

This song was included on the regular edition of their 2010 single “Fighting Man.” It’s the last track featuring Ryo Nishikido and Tomohisa Yamashita.

With a slightly retro vibe and an accessible melody, it’s a sweet love song that spotlights the loved one’s “smile.” I think the person you like can influence you in many ways—from how you think to your taste in music.

The lyrics depict that kind of mutual attraction.

Somehow, homemade curry and rice is spicy yet gives you a mild, comforting feeling, doesn’t it? If you listen to this song after a clash, it will surely warm your heart.

It’s a moving, nostalgic song that brings back memories of curry rice made by one’s mother.

The track is by Chihiro Nakamura, a singer-songwriter from Kumamoto Prefecture, and is included on her first album, “Dōmo Nakamura desu,” released in 2014.

The relaxed, warm melody paired with Nakamura’s cute vocals is irresistible—you could listen to it forever.

Being filled up both in stomach and heart by eating curry… I imagine many people can relate to the feelings expressed in the lyrics.

At one point, “morning curry” became a hot topic because Ichiro, who recorded 3,000 career hits in Major League Baseball, reportedly ate curry every morning—how about you all give it a try, too?
