A subgenre of psytrance: darkpsy.
Although it’s a loosely defined genre with a variety of styles, you can think of it simply as psytrance with a dark atmosphere.
This time, I’ve selected some classic tracks from the world of darkpsy.
Since many of these tracks have a sinister, eerie vibe, fans of genres like noise and gothic metal will also find plenty to enjoy.
There are also many tracks with pounding, resonant low end, so bassheads should have a great time too.

Dark Psyche Masterpieces | Into the dark and eerie world of psychedelia… (1–10)
Bao KaoCrone
In dark psy, it’s very common to use programmed instrumental hits rather than synthesizers in the intro.
Bao Kao, however, departs from that standard by diving straight into a cyber-like synth-driven intro.
Usually, tracks like this end up sounding like typical psychedelic trance, but this one still conveys a distinctly dark psy atmosphere.
Electronic music often draws attention for its groove, yet a melody line can instantly transform the mood.
This track really shows how important the melody line can be.
Dark Prog MonsterBraindrop
This is sudden, but are you familiar with the genre called ambient music? Also known as environmental music, it elevates environmental sounds into music, and this genre tends to pair very well with horror-related styles.
The dark psy classic “Dark Prog Monster” is a track that lavishly incorporates elements of such ambient music.
It’s a deeply crafted piece that conveys an eerie quality not just through atmosphere, but solidly through its sound as well.
DiabolicSilent Enemy
Even when we say “dark psy” in a broad sense, it takes many forms.
I imagine many of you enjoy tracks that evoke a truly terrifying atmosphere.
For those listeners, I highly recommend this work, Diabolic.
Personally, I’d call it one of the pinnacles of dark psy, meticulously crafted down to the finest details.
You can especially hear the obsessive attention to the basslines.

Defence MechanismPost Modern Music
For those who enjoy sci-fi-flavored dark psy, I recommend this track, “Defence Mechanism.” Dark psy often incorporates acoustic-style programmed elements, but this piece is composed entirely of electronic sounds.
That might seem simple, yet crafting dark psy solely with electronic timbres is surprisingly challenging.
Even from that standpoint, you can really sense the track’s strong structure and skillful arrangement.
Bells Of ChaosCrone
Like Silent Enemy, Kloon is a great composer working at the forefront of the dark psy scene.
His dark psy keeps the horror flavor relatively restrained.
Instead of leaning into horror, he brings the psychedelic trance elements to the forefront, so his tracks tend to be catchy and easy to get into overall.
This track, “Bells Of Chaos,” is structured with an alien-evoking vibe in the first half, an Arabian-style line in the middle, and rapidly shifting psychedelic trance in the latter half.
It’s a masterpiece with meticulous attention to detail.
