A subgenre of psytrance: darkpsy.
Although it’s a loosely defined genre with a variety of styles, you can think of it simply as psytrance with a dark atmosphere.
This time, I’ve selected some classic tracks from the world of darkpsy.
Since many of these tracks have a sinister, eerie vibe, fans of genres like noise and gothic metal will also find plenty to enjoy.
There are also many tracks with pounding, resonant low end, so bassheads should have a great time too.

When it comes to the two flagship genres representing trance, it has to be Psychedelic Trance and Goa Trance.
Darkpsy is a genre derived from Psychedelic Trance, but recently, as the range of styles has expanded, Darkpsy incorporating elements of Goa Trance has begun to appear.
This track, “Africa,” is a work where Darkpsy and Goa Trance are mixed in a well-balanced way.
The sharp, dark atmosphere is absolutely superb.
LockdownLogic Ufo
Dark psy isn’t made up solely of horror-tinged tracks.
Some pieces have a mechanical quality that evokes aliens.
“Lockdown” is exactly that kind of work—throughout the entire track, it powerfully conveys an atmosphere of “aliens” and “UFOs.” Its complex structure, with expertly mixed dissonance, might be hard to listen to for beginners, but for fans of dark psy, the track’s strong individuality is bound to be addictive.
FOLCLÓRICARaio de Luz
If you’ve never listened to dark psytrance before, you might imagine it as bizarre noise music.
Of course, there are plenty of unconventional tracks like that, but some pieces are actually wrapped up in catchy melodies.
“FOLCLÓRICA” is one such catchy track, sampling lines from media and video games and exuding a comical vibe.
It includes multiple screams, yet it never tips into an overly scary atmosphere—arguably a remarkable feat of technique in its own right.
SangoAlternativ
When you think of dark psytrance, many of you probably imagine eerie, menacing melodies, right? That style is the mainstream of dark psy, but there are also tracks that put more emphasis on the crisp, cutting edge that’s the appeal of trance.
Among those, “Sango” is particularly sharp—despite its dark atmosphere, it boasts exceptional accessibility.
The structure is orthodox, yet the level of polish is extremely high, and it delivers exactly the kind of drops you’re looking for.
SoflyNomad Aliens
Darkpsy features many distinctive tracks.
Its breadth of styles is top-notch, but that also means many pieces can be challenging for newcomers to listen to.
Sofly is darkpsy packed with psychedelic trance elements, so it doesn’t have the kind of idiosyncratic developments or melodies that might only appeal to certain listeners.
It may feel underwhelming to those well-versed in darkpsy, but it should be approachable for beginners.
