uchiwa (Japanese hand fan)

Uchiwa, the handheld fan synonymous with summer, are actually convenient to use in any season when it comes to creating a breeze.
As long as you have the frame, it’s an easy craft—just paste paper onto it.
A key charm is how freely you can customize it: you can draw on the paper surface, or experiment with different types of paper for pasting.
Designing motifs associated with summer is the classic approach for uchiwa.
But it could also be fun to incorporate motifs from other seasons to give it a different feel.
If you paste the paper snugly onto the frame, it’ll be practical; if you add three-dimensional decorations that extend beyond the edges, it could serve as a decorative piece for your room as well.

Hibiscus and Sea Creatures
Here’s an idea for a wall decoration that combines hibiscus flowers with sea creatures to bring out a summery vibe.
The result is a colorful display that older adults can also enjoy as a taste of summer.
To make the hibiscus, fold origami paper to create a template, then cut along the outlined sections.
Use the edge of a pair of scissors to gently curl the petals for a three-dimensional finish.
Also, cut out your favorite sea creatures—such as whales, fish, and jellyfish—from origami paper.
Just make a single slit and glue it together to create depth—give it a try! You can also have fun customizing the sea creatures by using patterned origami paper.
Tanabata decoration streamers garland

When July comes around, many people think of Tanabata.
That’s why I’d like to introduce a streamers garland.
A garland is a type of wall decoration made of multiple connected motifs.
This time, we’ll use motifs with fluttering decorations attached beneath star shapes.
When you line them up and hang them, it looks beautiful as they ripple in sequence when the wind blows.
I recommend using washi-patterned origami paper or tissue paper for the materials to create a more subdued, elegant look.
In conclusion
How did you like the take-home craft ideas for day service? We focused on projects with few difficult steps—like ones that just involve cutting and pasting—so they’re easy for older adults to make.
Since they’re all items that let you enjoy the season, such as uchiwa fans and wind chimes, they’re perfect as summer take-home crafts.
