[For Seniors] Recommended in December! Safe and Fun Indoor Recreation
December is a busy month at the end of the year.
It’s also a season when the cold is more noticeable and people tend to have fewer opportunities to go outside.
With that in mind, here are some physical activities and crafts for older adults that can be enjoyed indoors where it’s warm.
These are December-themed recreations, so they allow participants to see, feel, and enjoy the season while experiencing a sense of seasonal atmosphere.
They also provide various mental and physical stimulation—moving the body, using the fingers, thinking, and creating opportunities to interact with friends.
Please make good use of these recreations.

Snowball Volleyball with Balloons

It’s a volleyball-like game where you hit balloons coming toward you back into the opponent’s court.
Since it’s played in teams while seated, the key point is that it doesn’t put strain on the legs and lower back.
To incorporate it into a Christmas party, try using white balloons that evoke snowballs and decorating around the net with Christmas ornaments to enhance the festive atmosphere.
Because players look up to send the balloon over the net, it encourages extending the back and moving the body.
Curling

Curling, which gained a surge in popularity during the Winter Olympics.
Let’s enjoy that curling together with seniors at a tabletop! Put tape or similar markings on the table to set the scoring areas.
If you place a golf ball inside a paper cup, it will roll in a fun way.
Be careful—if you push it too hard, it may topple over.

knitting

When you think of winter, it’s the season for knits, right? How about trying to knit some small items like beanies or gloves? There are two types of knitting: using knitting needles and using a crochet hook.
Try whichever feels easier and work on it little by little.
Since you use your fingertips, it can also serve as brain training for older adults.
It’s not something you can finish all at once, but it’s exciting to look forward to the finished piece.
Making a calendar

By December, we’ll have finished using this year’s calendar.
So, for our December recreation activity, let’s make next year’s calendar! Twelve months might sound like a lot, but if we all work together, it’ll be done in no time.
Print out a free calendar template for the date sections, and in the margins, paste illustrations of seasonal foods, flowers, and events.
It’s also fun to plan the design and layout, so let’s share ideas and create it together.
Dance “Jingle Bells”

We’d like to introduce a senior-friendly dance set to the classic Christmas song “Jingle Bells.” It’s a wheelchair- and chair-seated dance, perfect for Christmas activities or parties! Of course, you can also do it standing—enjoy it in whatever way suits your condition.
The movements focus mainly on the upper body and match the lyrics.
The steps are simple, but they’re ideal for loosening muscles that have stiffened in the winter cold.
It’s easy to enjoy at home as well, so please give it a try!
“Bargain Sale” Game
The tussle you often see in manga during bargain sales—let’s try that as a recreation activity.
Have older adults sit facing each other with a towel spread out between them.
While the music is playing, they raise and lower their hands and do some light exercises as they wait.
When the music stops, they grab the towel and pull.
The person who gets the towel wins.
Mountain Cup

Some of you may have played golf back when you were working at a company.
Let us introduce the Mountain Cup, an activity that can bring back those memories.
As the name suggests, the course is shaped like a mountain.
Place a basket in the center, and lay plastic or cardboard boards—on which a ball can roll—over the top.
Make a hole in the center of the board, and roll the ball as you would in golf to get it into the central hole.
It’s easier to enjoy indoors than ground golf or gateball.
It’s likely to be fun for many older adults.
