Creating wall decorations not only brings out the seasonal atmosphere, but can also have brain-training benefits.

You can enjoy it by chatting and crafting in a big group, or by focusing quietly on your own.

Christmas bell

Christmas bells, one of the most iconic Christmas motifs, are such delightful items that just seeing them on display can lift your spirits.

Because their simple shape makes them easy to craft, they also offer a great chance to express the maker’s individuality—something older adults are likely to enjoy as well.

The video introduced here features a craft that cleverly uses a paper cup and colored paper to create an irresistibly cute Christmas bell.

Since the project involves using a utility knife and scissors, if that’s too difficult, you might have older adults choose their preferred colored paper and have them help only with the pasting steps.

Christmas wreath

When it comes to creating a festive Christmas atmosphere, a must-have item is a Christmas wreath—you can simply hang it on the wall and it instantly brightens up the space.

Of course, in December you’ll find plenty of wonderful ready-made options lined up in stores, but with a little creativity, there are many fun ways to make them together with seniors! In the video, we introduce a craft where we make poinsettias—December’s quintessential flower—out of origami and turn them into an adorable wreath.

The look of a wreath can change completely depending on the materials and theme you choose, and for seniors who are good with their hands, we’d love for them to try making wreaths with yarn or felt as well.

It’s also fun to create an original wreath alongside the other Christmas-themed crafts introduced in this article.

Santa boots

When it comes to Christmas decorations, many people probably think of Christmas boots.

They have a simple, snowman-like shape and are easy to make, and with a bit of creativity you can decorate them extravagantly.

It might also be fun to have small Christmas boots lined up on a Christmas wreath together with stars and flowers.

This time we’re introducing a craft using origami, but there’s also a method where you shape a Christmas boot from a paper cup or an empty paper carton from juice or other drinks, and then use red felt and the like to cover the carton to create a warm, cozy-looking Christmas boot.

Winter flower: three-dimensional cold camellia

Let’s brighten up the often lonely-feeling winter by making cold-weather camellias with origami.

First, take a sheet of origami paper cut into quarters and fold one piece into fourths.

Then snip into it with scissors to create red petals.

Fold the petals to add dimension, layer them, and glue them together.

Finally, attach the center piece made from yellow origami paper to complete the flower.

In addition to the flower parts, combine them with leaf and branch pieces and arrange them so they look like they’re blooming on the wall—highly recommended for a charming display.

A Santa Claus that’s cute even when standing up

A craft where you make a standing Santa Claus—how exciting! Creating it together with older adults sounds like a wonderful way to spend time.

By using straws or thick paper for the legs, you can make a Santa that stands on his own.

Through the crafting process—using your fingertips and planning the next steps—it’s said to stimulate and activate the brain.

As you make Santa, you might even enjoy sharing memories of past Christmases.

The finished pieces are perfect for decorating a Christmas party.

Please make good use of this idea to help create a lovely time for older adults.

Angels and wreaths made of paper

Introducing paper angels and wreaths! Fold white lace paper to create a delicate angel.

When you cut the hair, you can enjoy adding your own unique design.

Attach the angel to an origami holly wreath, and you’ll have an adorable wreath.

It’s simple to make yet a lovely piece that brings Christmas cheer.

Older adults can also enjoy making it while engaging their fingers and minds.

It would be wonderful to brighten a Christmas party or welcome the New Year with something you made yourself.

It’s fun to chat with others while crafting, or to focus quietly on the project.

Give it a try and create something beautiful!

snow rabbit

The snow rabbit, which is also used as a motif for traditional Japanese sweets, looks adorable as a snow sculpture too, with its pure white body that instantly evokes winter.

It’s a motif I recommend for wall decorations you can enjoy throughout the season, not just in December.

In the reference video, the basic three-dimensional body is made using newspaper and white paper, but as long as it’s white, you can create snow rabbits with a variety of textures depending on your ingenuity.

Even a simple round shape with ears and eyes attached to white cardstock will look convincing, so for those who find detailed work difficult, try suggesting a snow rabbit wall decoration.
