This time, we’re featuring Japanese bands that, sadly, have disbanded.

It’s a playlist packed with groups you’ll definitely want to hear—from timeless songs that colored our youth to that popular band rumored to reunite.

GO!GO!7188 is a three-piece rock band known for sharp guitar riffs and melodies with a distinctly Japanese flavor.

Since their major debut in 2000, they’ve released a string of hits like “Koi no Uta” and “C7,” performing everywhere from live houses to the Nippon Budokan.

Their 2007 U.S.

tour drew international attention as well.

Their songs—blending surf rock-style guitar, Group Sounds, and nostalgic melodies steeped in classic Japanese pop—are etched in many fans’ hearts as anthems of youth.

Though they sadly disbanded in 2012, their unique musicality remains undimmed and continues to exert a significant influence on the Japanese music scene.

Akai Koen is a four-piece rock band that started in a high school light music club.

Since their formation in 2010, they’ve drawn attention for a diverse musicality that goes beyond the bounds of pop.

They made their major debut in 2012 and captivated many listeners with a distinctive worldview and innovative sound.

Centered around guitarist Yosaki Tsuno, their songs incorporate elements of classical and contemporary music, effectively using dissonance to create a unique appeal unlike any other band.

Their work outside the band—such as writing songs for SMAP and YUKI—has also been highly praised.

If you’re looking for powerful sounds with complex song structures and technical ensemble playing that will get your adrenaline going, this is a band you should definitely check out.

Mio Yamazaki is a four-piece rock band formed in 2013 in Tachikawa, Tokyo.

Known for lyrics themed around the darker side of romance and their overwhelming live performances, they have garnered a passionate fanbase known as “Miolers.” They made their major debut in 2014 with Epic Records Japan, releasing their first single, Article 709 of the Civil Code.

Continuing their vigorous activities, they solidified their popularity and prowess, including a successful solo concert at Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall in 2017.

Their promotional app, Maji Yami Kanojo, recorded 300,000 downloads just ten days after release.

Their innovative promotional methods and bold stance in tackling social taboos generated significant buzz.

Formed in 2004, the four-piece girls’ band Nakanomori BAND captured the hearts of young women with a sound that fused pop and rock.

In 2005, they provided the theme song for a Fuji TV drama, propelling them into the spotlight.

Each member had a background such as graduating from music school, which showcased their high level of musicianship.

Although they disbanded in 2008 to much regret, their exhilarating rock sound continues to be loved by many fans.

Their many classic songs that colored people’s youth are sure to resonate with you as well.

Even after disbanding, the members have continued their musical activities, and there remains a strong chorus of fans hoping for a reunion.

PRIDEHIGH and MIGHTY COLOR

The six-member rock band HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR from Okinawa made their major debut in 2005 and quickly broke through thanks to a tie-in song for a TV anime.

Their sound—marked by distinctive male-and-female twin vocals and intense guitar riffs—captivated many fans.

In January 2008, there were changes within the band, including the departure of female vocalist Maki following her marriage, but they continued to work actively afterward.

Spanning everything from powerful rock numbers to moving ballads, HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR earned high praise for their live performances as well.

Though they sadly disbanded in 2010, their music is still cherished by many fans today.

Mix Speaker’s, Inc., a visual kei band formed in 2006 that described themselves as a “creative/performance collective.” They adopted a twin-vocal setup and were known for a distinctive “fantasy” style that built on music while crafting various stories as entertainment.

Their 2012 single “Shiny tale” debuted at No.

32 on the Oricon weekly CD singles chart, and it was used as an opening theme for a TV Tokyo anime, earning them a measure of success for their unique worldview and musicality.

Although they disbanded in February 2018 to much regret, their singular style and musical contributions as a visual kei band are likely still remembered by many fans today.
