There are many fun ideas for whiteboard-based recreational activities, such as word gathering games and kanji quizzes.
All of these ideas are great brain training and are recommended for older adults.
In this article, I’d like to introduce problems and quizzes that use “fill-in-the-blanks,” which are also commonly used in whiteboard activities.
We’ve prepared plenty of enjoyable questions and quizzes for seniors—like problems where you complete equations by inserting numbers into the blanks, and quizzes where you complete words by inserting the same hiragana—so please give them a try.

Do seniors like animals? Many of you might have or have had dogs or cats.
Here’s a fill-in-the-blank quiz with an animal theme! Put the name of an animal into the blanks to complete the proverbs.
All the proverbs featured are well-known, so the difficulty level is on the easier side.
When you have seniors actually try it, it could be fun to prepare versions by difficulty level.
How about ending with a tough question where they choose one animal from multiple options?
Fill in the numbers in the blanks! Number fill-in quiz

This is a fill-in-the-blank quiz where you complete proverbs by inserting numbers.
When it comes to proverbs that include numbers, examples include “Perseverance prevails” (literally, “Three years on a stone”) and “Fall seven times, stand up eight.” This quiz features those famous sayings as well as a variety of other proverbs.
Older participants may already know them, but in case answers don’t come easily, it’s a good idea to prepare hints in advance.
Try adding creative touches such as explaining the meanings of the proverbs or providing multiple-choice numbers!
Fill-in-the-blank quiz about occupations

There really are so many different jobs in the world, aren’t there? I’m sure older adults also have at least one job they’d love to try, even just once.
This is a fill-in-the-blank quiz with the theme of jobs.
Put letters into the blanks to complete the job titles.
They’re all common occupations, and they should feel familiar to many seniors.
Try tackling the quiz while imagining each job! After the quiz, it might be fun to ask which jobs people have actually done and which ones they wanted to do.
Fill-in-the-blank quiz about tourist cities

A little taste of travel! Here’s a fill-in-the-blank puzzle themed around tourist cities.
Each city name has two missing characters—fill them in to complete the name.
The quiz features tourist cities not only from Japan but from around the world.
Paired with the quiz, it would be fun to introduce famous landmarks and local specialties from each destination.
It might even encourage older adults, who tend to stay indoors, to look outward.

This quiz is a fill-in-the-blank game using names of foods.
Surprisingly, there are many proverbs that include food names.
Most older adults have likely heard these proverbs at least once.
Fill in the squares with the correct food to complete each proverb.
A variety of foods appear, such as sweets, vegetables, and fish.
It might also be helpful to provide a few options as hints and have participants choose the correct answer from them!

Fill-in-the-blank quiz for drink names

Plain hot water, tea, milk, black tea, coffee, and juice—we drink all kinds of beverages every day, don’t we? Many people probably have a go-to drink they always have right after waking up.
In this quiz, you’ll tackle fill-in-the-blank questions themed around beverages.
Even drinks you know well can be surprisingly hard to recall when they’re presented as blanks, which makes it a real brain teaser.
It’s great mental exercise, so give the quiz a try! As a hint, it’s also recommended to include fun facts like where the drink is produced or where it originated.
