[For Seniors] Feel the Arrival of Spring: A Collection of Cherry Blossom Craft Ideas

In this article, we introduce recommended “sakura craft” ideas for those looking for inspiration.

When you think of spring, many older adults probably picture cherry blossoms.

While many people look forward to cherry-blossom viewing, some have fewer opportunities to go out as they get older.

We hope even those individuals can feel the spring season while spending time in their rooms.

This time, we’ve gathered a range of ideas—from practical small items to decorations you can simply enjoy displaying.

There are also easy projects, like making decorations by dabbing with a sponge (tampon technique) and cutting and pasting illustrations.

Please use these ideas as a reference!

When you think of a punch, you might picture making round holes, but there are actually craft punches that cut out specific shapes—and there are cherry blossom shapes, too.

This idea uses those punches to make cherry blossoms.

First, punch out two blossoms, one large and one small, and layer and glue them together.

Then punch out the parts to use as stamens and attach them to the center of the blossom.

Since attaching the stamens is a delicate task, tweezers come in handy.

It’s a very easy project, so be sure to use it for your spring crafting!

Full-bloom cherry blossom display

Full-bloom cherry blossom display

This is a display created by combining pieces of paper to evoke a cherry blossom tree, which is essential to spring in Japan.

The cherry blossoms are made simply by cutting circles into flower shapes, but adding creases to give them dimension at this stage will contribute to a fuller, more voluminous final look.

Once the flowers are finished, arrange them while considering their angles, and install them as if placing them on a tree to complete the whole piece.

Making the flowers in various colors to create a gradient will enhance the three-dimensional effect, so that approach is also recommended.

Here’s an idea for a hanging cherry blossom decoration made with paper plates.

Cut out the inside of a paper plate so only the rim remains.

Do the same with the cut-out circle by removing its center so that only its rim remains as well.

Attach semi-transparent cherry blossom origami paper to the back of both rim-only paper plates.

On the front of the rims and the remaining full circular paper plate, stick lots of cherry blossoms punched out from origami paper using a craft punch.

Finally, connect these three parts vertically with a string, and you’re done! Use pale-colored origami for the cherry blossoms, and mix a few different colors for a lovely finish.

Cherry Blossoms in the Moonlit Night

Cherry Blossoms in the Moonlit Night

Cherry blossoms at night have a different kind of beauty from those seen during the day, don’t they? In daylight, the blossoms look delicately charming with their cute pink petals.

But under moonlight or illumination, they give off a more mature atmosphere.

Here’s a perfect wall decoration idea featuring night-time cherry blossoms for seniors who love yozakura.

Choose darker construction paper for the background of the cherry trees and blossoms, and add a moon to create a night-sakura scene.

As they make the blossoms, seniors will likely feel the arrival of spring.

Looking at the finished piece, they may appreciate the beauty of night cherry blossoms and even reminisce about their past cherry blossom memories.

Cut cherry blossom shapes out of colored construction paper, fold them so a crease forms in the center of each petal, and give them a three-dimensional finish.

Attach them to a longer strip of paper tape to create a weeping cherry tree effect.

In addition to full blossoms, it’s also recommended to include just petals or to make leaves from green construction paper and add those as well.

If you want to create something different from a typical wall of cherry blossoms in full bloom, why not try making this weeping cherry display? You’ll need a lot of blossoms, so divide up the work and make them together with everyone.

Cherry Blossom Torn-Paper Collage

Chigiri-e, a torn-paper collage, is a popular hobby that’s easy to try.

Because it uses your fingertips, it’s also effective for finger rehabilitation in seniors and for helping prevent dementia.

As a spring craft, let’s make cherry blossoms with chigiri-e! Using the color pages of a newspaper keeps costs down and is economical.

Tear five heart-shaped petals and combine them to create a cherry blossom.

Depending on which parts of the newspaper you use, each piece will turn out uniquely original.

Just tear and paste for seasonal greeting cards, and you’ve got a lovely gift.
