Let’s all work together to roll up tissue paper and make an ogre wall decoration! The method is super simple: just roll and stick.
Prepare lots of rolled tissue paper pieces, draw the ogre’s face, and stick the pieces onto a backing sheet with double-sided tape.
The colors differ by part—eyes, horns, hair, cheeks—so adjust how many pieces you roll to match each area.
Adding words like “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi” will make it feel even more like a Setsubun decoration.
In the cold of winter, let’s warm our hearts with shared laughter as we create together!

Let’s try making a handmade ogre (oni) hat! The main material is yarn.
Choose yarn in your favorite color and wrap it around a piece of cardboard over and over.
Once it’s thick enough, slide it off the cardboard, tie it in the middle, and round it out to form the hair section.
Next, draw patterns on construction paper, roll it into cone-shaped horn pieces, and glue them onto the yarn.
Finally, attach everything to the hat base made from cardboard and elastic, and you’re done! It’ll turn out so cute that you’ll be counting down the days to Setsubun.

When you do mamemaki (bean throwing), it’s handy to have a container for the beans, right? In that case, let’s make one by hand from a milk carton! Cut the carton to the depth you want, leaving one side longer to use as a lid.
After covering the outside with origami paper, punch two holes on the sides for a string, and attach Velcro to the front side and the lid.
Thread a strap so you can hang it around your neck, then draw an ogre’s face or add horn and hair pieces, and you’re done.
Fill it with beans and enjoy Setsubun!
tiger-pattern wreath
https://www.tiktok.com/@buchiko_hoiku/video/7464121566054452500When you think of what oni (Japanese ogres) wear, it’s got to be tiger-striped pants! It’s a cute choice for such fearsome creatures, isn’t it? Tiger stripes that evoke oni are perfect to include in February wall decorations.
Cut out the center of a paper plate to make a ring and paint it yellow.
Once it’s dry, tear black construction paper by hand and paste it onto the plate to create a tiger-stripe pattern.
Trim any excess, then attach Setsubun motifs like oni or Otafuku made from origami or construction paper, and your tiger-striped wreath is complete.
You can stick it on the wall or hang it from above—there are lots of fun ways to display it.
A powerful and realistic oni

Decorations and craft-style oni tend to have a cute look.
However, oni are originally terrifying beings that could make children cry.
If you’re aiming for realism, why not create a wall decoration showing a demon’s fierce expression amid blazing flames? Make the background with red, orange, and yellow construction paper, then attach a red oni cut from construction paper or origami on top to complete a powerful demon decoration.
Using sparkly origami or tapes adds depth and makes it feel more lifelike.

Oria – niKu
Let’s try playing a Setsubun balance game where you place little ogres (oni) on a base made from a paper plate.
The base is shaped like a semicircle, so each time you add an oni it wobbles, keeping players on edge.
Players take turns placing oni, and whoever causes the balance to tip and makes the oni fall loses.
This game is easy to make with just a paper plate and a single sheet of paper printed with oni illustrations.
Fold the paper plate in half, then add parallel creases to the left and right of the center fold to fix it into a semicircle.
For the oni, print the illustrations on paper, cut them into strips, and fold them into rectangular shapes.
Oni Underpants Garland
Speaking of oni pants, the classic is yellow with black tiger stripes! But in this idea, we break out of that set mold and make oni pants in a variety of patterns.
Snow bunnies, plum blossoms, masu cups labeled with “good fortune,” and even oni faces…
We have to tip our hats to these designs that feel fresh yet familiar.
They’re all colorful and super cute, so why not use them as inspiration to make an oni garland? Basically, you just cut out parts from construction paper and paste them on, but there are quite a few variations—like two different pant shapes—so be careful as you work.
