[For Seniors] Enjoy the Hot Summer to the Fullest! A Collection of Easy Craft Ideas
Summer is the season when we start to sweat more and more.
Even indoors, you may sometimes feel the heat.
However, some older adults seem to have a harder time sensing heat.
This time, we’ll introduce some simple, recommended crafts you can do indoors during the hot season, when outdoor activities tend to decrease.
By creating summer-themed pieces, you can help people feel the season, even if it’s become harder to sense it.
After making them, you can take them home or display them at a facility, which can also give a sense of accomplishment!
Crafting involves fine motor movements of the fingertips and thinking through the steps in your head, stimulating the brain and serving as brain training.
Please enjoy making them at your own pace.

[For Seniors] Make the Most of the Hot Summer! A Collection of Easy Craft Ideas (161–170)
Giant sunflower flower

These giant sunflower paper flowers are perfect for summery décor! Let’s make them by adapting paper pompoms using tissue paper.
Prepare three sheets of yellow tissue paper and six sheets of brown.
Stack each color separately, fold them in half horizontally, then open them flat.
Next, fold the brown stack in half vertically and use scissors to cut the top and bottom edges into a zigzag.
Place the cut brown stack in the center of the opened yellow stack and clip them together, then accordion-fold the whole stack.
Tie the center with clear fishing line (monofilament), and trim both ends into petal shapes.
Finally, gently separate and fluff each layer one by one to shape it, and your giant flower is complete! It looks beautiful on a wall or as a hanging decoration.
Sunflower brooch

Wouldn’t it be lovely to take home something you can use every day? With that in mind, I’d like to suggest a sunflower brooch.
This idea involves sewing fabric together to create a brooch with a sunflower motif.
You can attach it to clothing or hats, or even use it on curtains—there are many ways to enjoy it.
Sunflowers are typically yellow, but the impression changes depending on the depth of the color.
Try picturing the color of the place you’ll wear it and choose shades that will complement it.
Sunflower wreath

Here’s a sunflower wreath idea that will instantly brighten up your room.
First, prepare a paper plate.
Cut out the center to turn it into a wreath base.
Next, decorate the paper-plate wreath by wrapping it with construction paper and adding ribbons.
Finally, adorn it with sunflowers made from construction paper.
The yellow color will make a great accent in your room, and it will also create a cheerful atmosphere if you display it by your front door.
Sunflower wall-hanging arrangement

This is a wall-hanging arrangement made with artificial sunflowers.
Besides hanging it on a room wall, it’s also great for decorating your front door! Using tree branches as the base, arrange sunflowers and green-toned materials.
You can find the materials at 100-yen shops, so it’s a good idea to check the stores regularly.
First, bundle the green materials and secure them with a cable tie, then bundle the sunflowers while checking the balance.
You can add other materials afterward to increase volume.
Finally, tie two spots with a wide ribbon and you’re done! It also makes a perfect gift, so give it a try.
Sunflower wall decoration

Here’s an idea for sunflower wall decorations that will instantly brighten up your summer walls! Sunflowers are the quintessential summer flower—many of us may have grown them in our gardens as children.
Why not enjoy making these while reminiscing about those days? Layer two sheets of tissue paper, fold them in an accordion, staple the center to secure, trim both ends, and then fan it open to create the sunflower petals.
For the center of the sunflower, you can cut a circle out of construction paper and add patterns with crayons or other materials.
Depending on the size of your wall, use sunflowers as accents or make lots of them to create a stunning large display!
Sunflower magnet

Let me introduce a sunflower magnet you can make with origami paper and a plastic bottle cap.
First, prepare yellow, green, and brown origami paper.
Fold the yellow and green paper while marking guidelines, then cut them into flower and leaf shapes with scissors and shape them neatly.
When assembling the flower, layer the petals slightly offset so they don’t overlap directly—that makes it look nicer.
Cut the brown paper into a circle, then glue it on while checking the placement with the leaves to form the sunflower.
Glue a magnet to a plastic bottle cap, then attach it to the back of the sunflower to finish.
If you make a bunch and display them, they’ll transform the feel of your room.
Give it a try!
Soft, gently drifting, cute jellyfish

Sure to soothe the soul! How about making some soft, gently swaying, cute jellyfish as wall decorations? They’re easy to craft with everyday materials, making this a great idea for craft activities at day-service centers.
Crumple a few colors of tissue paper into balls and stuff them into a mesh strainer bag.
To finish, tie it with thread so the contents don’t fall out—that’s it! You can also turn them into hanging ornaments by threading a string through with a needle.
Try different color combinations of tissue paper and have fun creating!
