Even without being aware of it, we naturally find ourselves hearing electronica-esque sounds.
So this time, starting with emblematic tracks from the early ’90s often labeled IDM, we’ll introduce a wide range of classics spanning into post-rock, electro-shoegaze, and hip-hop!

Kim & JessieM83

Since the 2000s, a genre called electro-shoegaze has suddenly begun attracting attention—are you familiar with it? Shoegaze, which became a boom in early-90s Britain and has many outspoken fans among artists here in Japan, has had a profound impact on musicians in the electronica scene as well.
Among the leading artists who interpreted shoegaze—characterized by guitar noise, gorgeous melodies, and an ambient atmosphere—from the perspective of electronic music, and later broke through globally, is M83 from France.
Now operating as the solo project of Anthony Gonzalez, M83’s breakout came with the classic 2008 album Saturdays = Youth, which includes the masterpiece Kim & Jessie.
It’s an exquisitely beautiful, melodic track that distills the lyrical facets of shoegaze and electronica and elevates them into vivid dream pop.
It may no longer fit neatly within the definition of electronica, but in the sense that an artist rooted in electronica’s history reached this creative horizon, it can surely be called an epoch-making classic.
If you want to feel more of the electro-shoegaze elements, give the 2005 album Before the Dawn Heals Us a listen!
MeteoriteYears & Years

Released in September 2016, this track is a captivating dance-pop number that fuses a catchy beat with electronic elements.
Combined with the commanding vocals that are a hallmark of Years & Years, it grabs listeners and doesn’t let go.
Featured on the soundtrack of the film “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” the song conveys the power of love and the pivotal moments in life.
Its striking metaphors—such as likening sudden, intense emotions to a “meteor”—are another highlight.
It’s a must-listen not only for dance music fans but also for those interested in electronica.
One More TimeDaft Punk

For fans of electronica, this might just be the quintessential anthem of the 2000s.
Crafted by a French duo, its blend of weightless, floating melodies and life-affirming beats is undeniably uplifting.
Released in November 2000, the track became a worldwide hit.
It also drew attention for its animated music video created by Japanese manga artist Leiji Matsumoto.
The song encourages listeners to feel free, celebrate, and enjoy dancing through music.
Its message—that music unites people and fosters shared positive experiences—still resonates today.
From morning till night, it’s a track that makes you want to dance without getting tired; give it a listen.
Still PretendingPrefuse 73

An instrumental track with an indescribable beauty and abstraction.
It fully showcases Prefuse 73’s talent for blurring the boundaries between electronica and hip-hop while constructing a unique soundscape.
Included on the album Forsyth Gardens, released in April 2015, this piece is a pivotal song that heralds a new musical current after years of silence from Herren.
Its distinctive world, woven from complex rhythmic structures and emotionally rich melodies, invites each listener’s own interpretation.
Give it a listen on a quiet night or when you want to focus.
I ExhaleUnderworld

Known as innovators in the electronica scene, Underworld released a track from their 2016 album “Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future” that, despite running over eight minutes, never lets the listener go.
The lyrics interweave sensory imagery and fragments of everyday life, leaving space for individual interpretation rather than telling a concrete story.
While the track nods to the big beat that colored the club scene of the ’90s, it also incorporates distinctive musical elements of its own.
Its meticulous, refined structure blends beautifully with ’80s essences, instantly drawing the listener into its world.
It’s a track I highly recommend to anyone who wants to fully savor the allure of electronic music.
