February is packed with exciting events like Setsubun and Valentine’s Day! For projects with five-year-olds, there are plenty of ideas that make clever use of fine motor skills, such as making oni horns by wrapping yarn and creating items with scratch-card-style surprises.
It’s wonderful to nurture that special “I want to make it myself!” spirit unique to senior kindergarteners, while also giving them time to show their creations to friends and play with their finished works.
Here, we introduce craft ideas perfect for February’s seasonal events.
Enjoy the season together with the children as you create! Note: In this article, we use the term “seisaku (制作)” to refer to children’s creations as works (artworks).

Oni Roly-Poly Doll
The rounded shape is so cute! Let me introduce an ogre roly-poly toy (okiagari-koboshi).
Here’s what you’ll need: water balloons, shoji paper, yellow tissue paper, red tissue paper, craft glue, a brush, a toilet paper roll, scissors, white round stickers, a black pen, yarn, yellow construction paper, black origami paper, and a toothpick.
This is a great idea for older preschoolers who feel that flat crafts aren’t enough.
When you press it with your finger, the little ogre wobbles adorably! Be sure to give it a try.
Paper Cup: Talking Goblin Doll that Opens and Closes Its Mouth

Let’s make a chatty ogre puppet that opens and closes its mouth using a paper cup.
All you need are a paper cup and colored construction paper.
Cut a slit from the rim (the drinking edge) down to the base of the cup, then make an identical slit on the opposite side so they’re symmetrical.
Open the cup wide along the slits, and crease the base to create a hinge.
Cover the base with pink construction paper.
On the upper side, trim off the edge, then attach an ogre face made from colored paper.
Attach the body to the lower half, and you’re done.
It’s a fun craft that you can play with after making it.
Holly and sardines
@sayacky_be.child Materials list, tips, and tricks ▼ (Follow @sayacky_be.child before you forget!) Materials • Paper straws (mine are from Seria) • Green paper with both sides green, like construction paper (mine is from Seria) • Newspaper (about a quarter page) • Aluminum tape (Seria, DAISO, etc.) • Small white round stickers (Seria, DAISO, etc.) Handy tools when making • Scissors • Clear tape • Pinking shears Tips • Some kids bravely throw beans, some cry and run away, and some try to protect others. You’ll see all kinds of little dramas during Setsubun bean-throwing. • I don’t want it to be just a scary event. I hope it becomes an experience that values each child’s individuality and helps them grow. • Aluminum tape is super handy—keep one on hand. When you want to create something shiny or metallic, kids absolutely love it! Nice to meet you! Let’s play like kids! I’m Sayacky, a preschool teacher and mom of two. I share activities that get both kids—and those who used to be kids—excited together! Items that ward off demons! Here’s an idea for making a “holly and sardine” charm.
You’ll need a straw, green wrapping sheet, newspaper, tape, glue, aluminum tape or aluminum foil, white round stickers, and a black pen.
First, cut the wrapping sheet into leaf shapes.
It’s best if you can capture the spiky shape characteristic of holly leaves! Next, attach the cut leaves to the straw, roll up some newspaper, and stick it to the end of the straw.
Finally, shape the newspaper into a sardine, wrap it with aluminum foil, and you’re done!
Swaying snowflake hanging ornament
@yuru.seisaku7 I made a cute little hanging ornament that gently sways! If you hang it by your window, it will sway and look adorable. Using a transparent material for the snowflake backing makes it even prettier as the light shines through. Give it a try!#Nursery School CraftProduction ideas

Let’s create with a variety of materials and techniques! I’ll introduce a hanging ornament of gently swaying snowflakes.
Here’s what you’ll need: construction paper, scissors, paint, craft glue, aluminum foil, cotton, ribbon, crayons, pom-poms, origami paper, and cotton swabs.
Try making snowflakes using different techniques! When the wind blows, the snowflakes attached to the ribbon sway softly and are soothing, so I highly recommend it.
Be sure to have fun making it together with the kids!
Choco box-style scratch card
@jabbycrafty A chocolate-box style Valentine’s card 🍫💌 Scratch it to reveal the message! When I graduated from high school, I gave this scratch-off chocolate box card to my crush☺️ I was too shy to confess on the spot, so I said, “Scratch it after graduation,” and handed it over. I was worried it might be awkward if I got rejected 💦 But it’s a wonderful card that helps you find the courage to share your feelings! ✨ Everyone, please try making one too 🩷Valentine’s card#ValentineChocolateConfessionValentine's Day#ValentinesDay#valentinesdaygift

Let’s make a message card with a fun surprise! Here’s an idea for a scratch card like a chocolate box.
You’ll need thick paper, a black pen, colored pens, scissors, clear tape, colored construction paper, dish soap, and acrylic paint.
If a regular message card feels a bit boring, try making this trick card—perfect for older kids! It’s exciting and delightful to both give and receive a cute card.
Give it a try!

It looks just like real chocolate! Introducing chocolate bark magnets.
Here’s what you’ll need: craft glue, acrylic paint, decorative craft materials such as embellishments, a magnetic sheet, and scissors.
First, spread acrylic paint mixed to a chocolate color and craft glue over the magnetic sheet.
Next, sprinkle on your decorative materials like craft parts.

Beautiful, like sparkling gemstones! Let me share an idea for making chocolate out of scrap materials.
You’ll need plastic bottle caps, foil origami paper, aluminum foil, wrapping materials, and decorative stickers.
This idea is a Valentine’s craft you can make using plastic bottle caps.
Adding decorative stickers makes it even more charming, so I highly recommend it! The finished crafts look adorable displayed in a gift box.
