GarnetOku Hanako

Oku Hanako has many bittersweet love songs that can move you to tears, and Garnet is one of those heartrending tracks.
Chosen as the theme song for Mamoru Hosoda’s animated film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, it became widely talked about as a sad song that links perfectly with the film’s world, and it has been beloved for many years.
The lyrics capture a chest-tightening feeling of youth; it’s also a popular karaoke choice that makes you reminisce about your younger days.
It’s a song that really suits a gentle, heartfelt delivery.
Fireworks MagicAnsako

An female singer from Tottori Prefecture, Ansako.
“Hanabi no Mahō” is a bittersweet unrequited love song perfect for summer.
On the last day of summer break, while setting off fireworks with the person she likes, she wants to confess her feelings but just can’t get the words out—“Ah, summer is ending…!” If you’ve ever been in love, you can probably relate to her hesitation and inner conflict.
It’s a little unfair, but if I could use magic, I’d find myself wishing, just like the girl in the song, “Please feel the same way I do.”
A Midsummer Night’s DreamMatsutōya Yumi

The theme song of the smash-hit drama “Dare ni mo Ienai” (I Can’t Tell Anyone).
I bet many women were on the edge of their seats each week watching the chilling performances by Chikako Kaku, Shirō Sano, and Yōko Nogiwa.
It’s a classic summer anthem from 1990 that anyone in their 50s and up—men included—will recognize.
The percussion intro really amps up the drama that’s about to unfold, doesn’t it? The lyrics, which faintly evoke Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, seem to reflect Yuming’s own belief that “comedy is tragedy,” perhaps.

A Long, Short FestivalShiina Ringo

She superimposes a woman’s prime with the hot, flamboyant season of summer, portraying both gorgeously and seductively in Ringo Sheena’s “Nagaku Mijikai Matsuri.” Released in 2015, the song features a duet with Ukigumo, the guitarist from Tokyo Jihen.
The period celebrated as a woman’s prime may seem long, but it’s actually all too brief.
There’s a sense of transience and loneliness in that shortness, yet the song conveys a determination to let every flower bloom to the fullest during that fleeting time.
Do that, and you can go on living proudly, as if forever in your prime.
In that sense, it’s a number that, in a way, cheers women on.
A Shortcut to SummerSakurazaka46

This is the first song Sakurazaka46 ever performed.
Its lyrics, which capture the sparkle of youth, convey impatience and heartache in love, along with the anticipation of new challenges.
While depicting the shift from the rainy season to summer, it symbolizes chance and hope—an essential point.
It’s a special track for the group that speaks for their feelings as they embark on a fresh start.
With a pure, wavering maiden’s heart in love that many can relate to, it’s a perfect youth anthem for this season.
The song is included on the single “Sakurazuki,” released on February 15, 2023.
Tropical Night FantasyMomota Kanako

A song by Kanako Momota that skillfully conveys the passion and fluttering feelings of a summer night.
It paints the rising emotions alongside the swelter of a tropical night with a brisk rhythm and catchy melody.
Its sound, an exquisite fusion of EDM and a retro vibe, is sure to make listeners want to dance.
Included on the EP “30th,” released in July 2024, it also gained attention as the tie-in song for Recruit’s “Encounters not yet here.” campaign.
Perfect for a summer night drive or when you want to liven things up at karaoke.
Why not enjoy a hot summer night with Momota’s captivating vocals?

Midsummer Fruitayaka

One of Southern All Stars’ classic summer songs! But in this article, I’m intentionally introducing a cover version! The popular singer-songwriter Ayaka has covered this song! Of course, the original sung by Keisuke Kuwata is truly wonderful, but the version sung with her clear, beautiful voice is also really lovely, isn’t it? It has a charm that’s different from the original!
