Summer MissSakakibara Ikue

The song that Ikue Sakakibara released in 1978 as her seventh single also became a hot topic in 2003 as the CM song for Glico’s “Papico.” Its cute, poppy melody perfectly matches the image of ice cream and is a classic summer tune you’ll want to listen to again and again.
It’s a bright, feel-good track that makes you want to play it by the seaside or while driving.
Chaco’s Seaside StorySazan Ōrusutāzu

This was Southern All Stars’ 14th single, released in January 1982.
Even at the time, it was crafted with an awareness of Showa-era 1960s kayōkyoku and Group Sounds, and I remember thinking when I heard it upon release, “There’s something nostalgic about this song.” Although it came out in winter, from the very first piano phrases in the intro it evokes a bittersweet summer twilight, making it a masterpiece with vivid, cinematic imagery.
Since its initial analog release, it has been reissued on CD many times, so if you’re in your 50s, there are probably plenty of you who played this on your car stereo while out on a date with your girlfriend.
Morning of the PegasusIgarashi Hiroaki

The clear tones of the acoustic guitar and piano are striking, and just hearing the intro gives you a refreshing, cleansing feeling, doesn’t it? This is the song that brought Hiroaki Igarashi, hailing from Hokkaido, wider recognition, and it perfectly captures the breezy atmosphere of the early 1980s.
The lyrics, which sing of setting off toward a future full of dreams and hope, carry a gentle warmth that gives listeners an encouraging nudge.
Released as a single in 1980 and included on his debut album NORTHERN LIGHTS – Hokuto Shichisei, this work stands as a representative piece from Igarashi’s early career.
It was also aired on NHK’s Minna no Uta, which likely helped it become widely beloved.
It’s the kind of song that can give you a refreshing boost when taking a new step forward or on a morning when you’re feeling a bit low.
It may even make some listeners’ hearts ache with nostalgia as they remember summers from back then.
Shinin’ On-kun is sad.rukku

LOOK is a rock band that was active from 1985 to 1988.
Their active period was only three years, but they left behind iconic songs that represent the 1980s.
One of them is “Shinin’ On Kimi ga Kanashii.” It’s a song that portrays a man walking along the beach at night, reflecting on memories with the one he loves.
Rather than a summer song, it’s a song about remembering summer, so it’s also nice to listen to during the change of seasons.
I hope it inspires you to reminisce about those wonderful days.
Marina’s SummerWatanabe Marina

Marina Watanabe, a former member of Onyanko Club.
When it comes to her summer-themed singles, it has to be “Marina no Natsu.” Its lyrics tell a story: a woman who falls in love at first sight at a marina in summer returns to the same marina the following year.
Her single-minded devotion has moved many listeners.
Incidentally, since Marina Watanabe’s given name comes from “marina,” the title can be seen as a double meaning.
Keep that in mind as you listen.
Lonely Tropical FishWink

Released in 1989, this was Wink’s fifth single.
It won both the Annual Grand Prix at the 22nd All Japan Cable Broadcasting Awards and the 31st Japan Record Award.
The duo also made their first appearance on the Kōhaku Uta Gassen, and this can be described as a mega-hit that became synonymous with Wink.
Many people likely still have its distinctive chorus melody etched in their ears.
The Days of Rainbows and Sneakerschūrippu

It was released in 1979 as Tulip’s 16th single.
The lyrics and music were written by Kazuo Zaitsu, and it sold over 500,000 copies in total, becoming Tulip’s first major hit in a while.
It is one of their most popular and representative songs.
