With vocals that feel like a cry from the soul and an energetic stage presence, HOUND DOG set listeners’ hearts ablaze! Formed in 1976 around Kohei Otomo, they’re an indispensable band in the history of Japan’s rock scene.

While rooted in rock, their music spans a wide range, from heartfelt pop to moving ballads.

They debuted in 1980 with the single “Arashi no Kinyobi,” and in 1985 they catapulted to nationwide fame with their signature song “ff (Fortissimo),” which was featured in a Nissin Cup Noodles commercial.

Their true essence is in their live performances! In 1989, they even set a legend by playing 15 consecutive days at Nippon Budokan.

When you need the courage to face adversity, their music will surely be a powerful source of support.

Probably Maybe Meiji feat. Ah, Tagirentarōrekishi

Rekishi is a music project that delivers top-tier funk with Japanese history as its theme.

It’s the solo moniker of Takafumi Ikeda, also known as the former keyboardist of SUPER BUTTER DOG, and his groovy musicianship is second to none.

The project began in 2007 with the album “Rekishi,” and the tracks—featuring star guests like Ringo Sheena and Daichi Miura performing under playful “Rekishi names”—are brimming with a sense of fun.

Ikeda’s entertainer spirit is astounding, too: for the first pressing, he hand-drew the cover art for 10,000 CDs.

Even if history isn’t your strong suit, once you experience Rekishi’s music, those tricky figures and events will start to feel endearing.

It’s a project that will make you want to dive into the world of history.

Included on the 1990 album “Ongaku Brigades.” A three-piece music band from Okinawa, formed in 1988.

The slow-tempo R&B rhythm that unfolds gently and the tear-jerking blues guitar are easy on the ears, and Higa’s soulful vocals riding over the mellow melody send chills down my spine.

Little BoyTHE POGO

A single released in 1985.

A four-piece rock band formed in 1985.

It’s a striking number featuring shouted vocals over a melody that centers on a simple, rough, fast-unfolding drum tone and aggressively played guitar sound.

Formed by members who started as reader models for fashion magazines, the girls’ band SILENT SIREN made their major debut in November 2012 with the single “Sweet Pop!”.

Centered around Harajuku, they enjoy overwhelming support from junior high and high school girls, and their official LINE account has amassed over 450,000 followers.

In 2015, they became the fastest girls’ band in history to headline a solo show at the Nippon Budokan, and they have also performed at Yokohama Arena and held world tours across Asia and the United States.

While radiating a sparkling aura, they have evolved technically, exploring new territory with a diverse range of songs.

Each member’s individuality stands out as well, showcasing talents beyond the band framework—such as a bassist who is also an active picture-book author and a keyboardist who excels in dance and DJing.

Daydream BelieverTHE TIMERS

Included on the 1989 album “TIMERS.” A Japanese-language cover of the single released in 1967 by the American band The Monkees.

Used in a commercial for Acecook’s “Super Cup.” A four-piece rock band formed in 1988.

It was formed by gathering members as a protest after a planned single by RC Succession was canceled from release.
