Masterpieces that sing of freedom. Recommended popular songs.

When work, studies, or relationships aren’t going well and everything feels stifling, we all sometimes find ourselves thinking, “Ah, I just want to be free…” Freedom may be one of the things people seek most in life.

We fight for freedom, we struggle for it.

These are songs that sing of those daily endeavors and ways of living.

Some are quite serious—so moving they can feel heavy on the heart.

I hope you can find something that fits your current mood—songs that resonate, give you strength to live, or warm your heart—and use them as a change of pace.

A classic anthem to freedom. Recommended popular songs (21–30)

BURNTHE YELLOW MONKEY

Disbanded in 2004 and reunited in 2016, THE YELLOW MONKEY—affectionately known as “Iemon”—has fans across a wide range of ages.

One of their signature songs, “BURN,” was released as a single in 1997.

It’s also a very popular karaoke number.

While the song doesn’t sing about freedom in a direct way, you can feel a palpable heaviness; for those who long to obtain freedom, it’s sure to strike a chord.

It’s a song that seems to express yearning for freedom and the state of being constrained.

Because it's a free countryMōningu Musume.

Morning Musume can’t be defined by the word “idol” alone—their dancing and expressive power always amaze me.

This song, Because It’s a Free Country, was released in 2018 as their 66th single under the name Morning Musume ’18.

It’s a cool, danceable track with many lyrics I can really relate to.

I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to become stronger and think positively.

It’s a song that gives you the strength to move forward, with a toughness that says you won’t fret over what’s already done.

April windElefanto Kashimashi

Elephant Kashimashi is a band that always sings with burning passion and energizes everyone.

Their song “Shigatsu no Kaze” (April Wind) is relatively fresh and poppy compared to their other tracks.

It was included as the B-side to “Kanashimi no Hate,” released in April 1996, and it’s a fan favorite.

As the title suggests, April carries the image of a month of new beginnings, and because it’s spring, it makes you feel renewed—like you can reset who you’ve been and start again.

GraduationOzaki Yutaka

A famous song by Yutaka Ozaki, who passed away in 1992.

He left us many pieces that resonate deeply with the heart.

At the time, he was immensely popular among young people and had a charismatic presence.

Even more than 20 years after his death, he is supported by many artists, and new fans continue to emerge.

His timeless songs still move people’s hearts today.

BRAND NEW EVERYTHINGsutoreitenaa

A song included on Japanese rock band straightener’s 2012 single “From Noon Till Dawn.” It sings about the small freedoms that lie dormant in everyday life—things you won’t notice unless you pay attention.

It’s a striking track that makes you realize the happiness and freedom that are right in front of you.

It’s a song that was used as the theme for Fuji TV’s morning information program Mezamashi TV.

I used to hear it often in the mornings.

It’s refreshing and makes you feel like you can do your best today.

The chorus, sung by vocalist Shiho Ochi, has an impressive, soaring tone that kept replaying in my head.

Even now, on nice days, I feel like blasting it while driving.
